Evening Woopert - overcast morning so was up at sparrow fart and finished painting the deck skirt - now to mow the lawns - to the shops - cook some meals for my dad - make dinner for the high command and self then maybe will have time to scratch my bum - phew - hope the rain wasn't too heavy and the wind too strong it would have concerned any toupee wearers but I'm sure it was brolly up and a purposeful stride down the front - why would there be CCTV cameras at the tip I know one mans trash is another mans treasure you must live in an area with very high quality rubbish - hope tomorrows weather is better ATB

Historians have traditionally attributed the Panic of 1837 to a real estate bubble and erratic American banking policy. Most speculation concerned western land opened to settlement after Indian removals, but northeastern forests were among the most overvalued holdings. One contemporary observed, “The speculation in Maine timber lands was the first in order, the most extravagant and irrational, and the most ruinous to those engaged in it.” In Massachusetts, Nahant Bank and Boston’s Oriental Bank fell victim to this speculative fever when their assets became dangerously concentrated in unimproved Maine land far from navigable waterways. An 1838 survey confirmed that this property was grossly overvalued and both banks failed.

The 1839 Treaty of London derives its significance from Article 7, which bound Britain to guard the neutrality of Belgium in the event of the latter's invasion.
The German Government, intending to do just that so as to reach France (specifically Paris) all the faster in the opening weeks of the First World War, asked the British government in August 1914 to effectively ignore the "scrap of paper" committing Britain to the defence of Belgium. Britain refused, Germany invaded Belgium anyway: and Prime Minister Asquith took Britain into the Great War on 4 August 1914.

During the early and mid-1800s, George Frederick Cruchley (1796-1880) produced some of the clearest and most attractive maps of London. His 1846 map shows the many sites that impacted the life of Dr. John Snow, the prominent epidemiologist and anesthesiologist who moved to London in 1836. This paper map, now in delicate condition, was of the type used by ordinary people to find their way in the city.

The California Gold Rush (1848–1855) began on January 24, 1848, when gold was found by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. All told, the news of gold brought some 300,000 people to California from the rest of the United States and abroad. Of the 300,000, approximately half arrived by sea, and half came overland from the east, on the California Trail and the Gila River trail.

The gold-seekers, called "forty-niners" (as a reference to 1849), traveled by sailing ship and covered wagon and often faced substantial hardships on the trip. While most of the newly arrived were Americans, the Gold Rush attracted tens of thousands from Latin America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. At first, the gold nuggets could be picked up off the ground.

China in the 1850’s was a poverty stricken, violent place. A series of upheavals including political rebellions, drought and the soporific effect of opium addiction had transformed this cultured and dignified land into a famine-ridden wasteland.
Around the end of 1852, the bloody Taipang rebellion started and it soon devastated Southern and Central China. During this terrible period, more than 600 cities were destroyed in seventeen provinces. About 130 million Chinese people were slaughtered in the conflict or died from disease or starvation. Meanwhile in Victoria, a Chinese immigrant to Australia, Louis Ah Mouy, responded to the opportunity to strike it rich when gold was discovered in Yea. Louis wrote to his brother in Canton encouraging him to come to Australia and make their family’s fortune. Overpopulation was another problem and Chinese families found it impossible to achieve prosperity and security no matter how hard they were prepared to work. As loyalty to family was the strongest cultural value, they looked abroad for opportunities to earn and send monies home to their families rather than to leave their homeland permanently. They were sojourners not immigrants.

The Great Exhibition in 1851 was the first international exhibition of manufactured products. It was organised by Henry Cole and Prince Albert, and held in a purpose-built Crystal Palace in Hyde Park.

Evening anti - I was in Shirley, luckily nowhere near St Marys !! Very nice Italian restaurant in the High Street called Puccini's , had a great meal there washed down by a Peroni.
