GWR 5028 Llantilio Castle – Relatively unknown and in the shadow of its surviving sister, 5028 became an early victim of the scrapper’s torch following an accident on 16th December 1959 near Plymouth where she suffered what looks to be relatively mild damage to the buffer beam after colliding with a diesel at Devonport Junction. In 1960, though, when the reduction in the steam stock was beginning in earnest, that damage was sufficient excuse to justify scrapping at Swindon and soon, 5028′s boiler was all that remained, being recycled onto 4085 Berkeley Castle.

Great Western Railway Castle Class No.5029 Nunney Castle was built at Swindon Works in 1934, and takes the name of a small castle near Frome, Somerset.

The locomotive was used in many publicity and “life on the railway” type of photographs. During the first day of the World War II Evacuations the locomotive hauled trains carrying children being taken from London to the safety of the countryside. Nunney Castle was also used to haul the Royal Train in October 1957 from Paddington to Gloucester.

Ex-GWR 4-6-0 4073 Class No 5033 'Broughton Castle' passes south with the diverted Pines Express on 10th September 1962.
The 1962 Winter timetable saw the Pines Express being diverted from its old route via the Somerset & Dorset line and No 5033 is seen on the inaugural service. Built by Swindon works to Lot 296 in May 1935, No 5033 was to remain in service until September 1962 when it was withdrawn from 81F Oxford shed to be scrapped by J Cashmore of Great Bridge.
The Pines Express was a passenger service which originally ran unnamed until 26th September 1927 when the marketing department named the service to generate publicity. which ran daily between Manchester and Bournemouth between 1910 and 1967. It is believed to have been named after the pine trees growing in the Chines in the Bournemouth area.
