The death has occurred of Archdeacon Michael O'Brien, known to a generation of Cork GAA supporters as "the Canon".
Among many other achievements, O'Brien steered Cork to two of their most notable All-Ireland hurling victories in 1984 and 1990, and led UCC to eight consecutive Fitzgibbon Cup victories in the 1980s, winning 10 titles in 11 years.
He was made a vice-president of Cork County Board at the 2003 county convention and was president of Blackrock Hurling Club at the time of his death.
His remarkable career as an inter-county mentor brought him nine All-Ireland titles - apart from the aforementioned senior titles, he served as coach to six senior teams in total, six minor winning teams (1969-71, 1974, 1978 and 1979) and the junior winning team of 1983.
The Innishannon native was associated with Blackrock since his days as a curate there in the 1960s, serving as club chairman and coaching the senior hurling team for six years. He was involved in their county final victories in 1985 and 1999, and was also coach when they lost the finals of 1986 and 1998.
