    Hope this helps AK -

Iceland has abandoned plans to join the EU. At a meeting with reporters, one of whom was a correspondent Metro, Olafur Grimsson, President of Iceland explained why the country prefers independence, and answered other questions.
    POSTED ON: Yesterday 9:05
    ANNA GAMZIKOVA

Why the Icelandic government decided to finally withdraw the application for accession to the EU?

Accession to the EU is not in the interests of Iceland: For the same reasons, it is not profitable for some of Norway and Greenland, which forced to leave the European Union. As unprofitable due to the nature of our economy (in particular, we are talking about the introduction of quotas for fishing in the case of European integration) and our location.

Iceland That is more profitable to remain independent? We'd better own arrangements with various countries. In the near future it will interesting times here in the Atlantic. Especially for Norway, Iceland and Greenland - countries outside the EU. Only need to look at the globe to see the importance of this geopolitical triangle. In this region, given the growing interest in the Arctic, more will develop shipping. Question by Arctic territory as a new collaboration for the first time you touched his meeting with Putin 11 years ago.

What has changed? At that meeting, Vladimir Putin noted that issues related to the Arctic, it is best to first contact with the regional authorities - the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Kamchatka, Chukotka. In the last 5-7 years the approach has changed. And the president of Russia, and the Foreign Ministry consider the Arctic as a priority issue for the federal government. One of the latest agreements - about search and rescue operations at sea, there is also discussion of the problems associated with oil in the Arctic, with the protection of the environment. Address issues related to IT-technology: laying submarine cables, installing regular flights. Last year opened area between Iceland and St. Petersburg ... We are proud that an Icelandic company became the first carrier, operates regular flights to all countries of the Arctic. Petersburg has to realize its significance - I already said that it can be called the capital of the Arctic. Given its location no other city can claim that title.

What more prospects for cooperation with Russia? Of course, we remain interested in the export of fish and Icelandic meat and produce greenhouse farms. Opening direct communication with St. Petersburg (seasonal message, will resume on June 3. - Comm. Ed.) Will boost tourism. On the whole, will be more convenient to travel: Iceland became a link, for example, with the United States. At the Olympics in Sochi I spoke with conductor Valery Gergiev. He said that he flew to America through Iceland, and it was the most comfortable flight. Thank you for your help in preparing interview Nordic Council of Ministers.

That is interesting. One worry is that Russia is pushing to be the ruler of the Arctic so they can get the oil and gas. I think I am happier with Rússland than if Kína had a finger in the cake because you will soon find the Chineses finger has scraped everything out and all is left is the shell. Reading of the Rúss interfering in Úkraína again, they are not good neighbours either.

Last week I was offered a bribe my employers to leave their payroll. Yesterday I accepted and I will shortly become a pensioner :emoticon-0102-bigsm

This has been my career goal from the first day I started work. Not a great achievement but it has been achieved about 5 years before the state pension date.

Hope that it goes well Scullion. I have found that I have achieved balance in my life by putting the rat race behind me and having the time to do my own thing. Good Luck to you.

A good decision, Scullion. I managed it 6 years before the state pension and have never regretted it for a moment. Being able to choose what you do and when you do it is a constant delight.

I had to retire 4 years ago due to my health, I've been diabetic for about twenty years now, but 4 years ago it was under such poor control that I now have to inject myself twice daily! It is now back under good control after a big hiccup 18 months ago with a reaction to an infected mosquito bite, but the minute you are on insulin, taxi insurance goes through the roof!

I was devastated to give up work and even worse to give up driving, but I couldn't afford 2 grand a month insurance! Within a week I was a new man, still missed driving but I do not miss all the abuse from the idiot drinkers on a Friday and Saturday night, I don't miss the robbing bastards that get out and run rather than paying their fare! I'm happy, I go to visit friends in Sunderland 3 times a year, it has unshackled me! I love it!!

I knew somebody that had to do that and me being the wimp I am I hate needles. It made me shudder just to think of it.

As it happens, he was a Sunderland supporter too.
