Morning all, bright and sunny here at present, but possibility of heavy rain this afternoon. Having received a nice new digital decoder to replace the one that died, the TV is now refusing to come on, so have to be around the house as the repair man will be coming between noon and 5.00 pm. "He will phone you in the morning to give better detail of his arrival time". This means of course that I have to wait around this morning for the phone call. They might just as well said he will come sometime Friday. :(

Morning all - off work again today as my knee reacted badly to three consecutive days at work and am having difficulty getting around. :(

Frenchie - service just isn't what it used to be, is it? Although an experience I had this week did restore my faith in some. Last weekend I noticed that some slates had dislodged from my roof, one of which was perched rather precariously on the guttering directly above the path that children take to school, three stories up & too high for me. A ring around all the local roofers/builders/handymen proved fruitless, so my wife resorted to a cry for help on Facebook. That ended up with a builder from 20 miles away coming straight around to fix the problem - couldn't believe our luck. Unfortunately our young idiot neighbour over the road threw a major spanner in the works by parking a van in the only vantage point - then denying that it was his when we asked if he could move it. A wasted trip for the builder, but he did come back the next morning to do the job with his offsider. Total cost £35 - couldn't believe it....

Interesting story about builders there BB. My daughter is project managing a house restoration here for the family to live in when finished. She wanted to make three new openings internally for doors, but each wall is stone, minimum half a metre thick. She received a quote from an English builder of €1,100 per opening plus materials. Ridiculous price says I. I will get someone I know to come round and give you a price, which he did on Tuesday. €150 per opening including materials and he would start yesterday. Why such a difference she asked me. Maybe the first one thought that a woman would know no better, or he didn't want to do the job were my thoughts. Anyway the man who got the job started yesterday and even took my daughter to his home to give her some ideas on finishes, so all's well there.

My TV man has just phoned to say he will not be here today, but tomorrow morning as he has been delayed. Oh well, you don't win them all.

Spent yesterday pm with the British Gas CH engineer - we have a contract with them - and I have to say it's an excellent if a tad expensive service and the guy who usually comes to our house is excellent and goes the extra mile. The pressure in the system fell to almost zero and I could not turn the valve to increase it again, so the system just stops. He was here 2hrs (at £80 an hour) and it also turned out we needed a new mother board in the boiler, £150, too. They do a clean job too. So warm showers & nice and warm again.

Blimey Scully - do they not offer insurance cover? The labour for that one visit cost more than my annual cover for gas/electricity breakdown...

Just watch the Winter Olympics curling final which was something of a disappointment. Never seen men do so much sweeping...
