I love the way nothing seems to happen between you going to bed and rising again, Dave. It gives me a sense that some things in the world are fine.

Morning all, back from town and a visit to the lab for Mme's six monthly blood test.

On route I could see flashing lights in the distance as we were going past the heavily wooded military camp. A car was in the ditch in a very battered state, and judging by it's age, a write off. A breakdown truck was on the scene getting ready to haul the car out and the local police were directing traffic around the mess. I couldn't see if the driver of the car was still on the scene and alright, or if he/she had been taken off to the hospital, but the cause of the accident was still there, stretched out in the road. A medium sized wild boar will not be seeing another day. They and deer cause a huge number of accidents every year, with people being killed from time to time. The hunt does manage to control their numbers in part, but not too many finish up in the freezer. It is a shame really when they do get onto the roads as I have watched a family of boar happily grazing across the field, and the deer, who I have a running battle with to keep away from my vegetables, are the most graceful of creatures.

Is it just me who now has a mental image of an irate OFH chasing after deer telling them to leave his cabbages alone?

We have wild boar in the forests close to our house Frenchie (No not in Cologne - I live about 5 km. away from Engelskirchen in the middle of nowhere). Mostly they see/smell you well in advance but I recently saw one early in the morning at about 50 metres distance. Mostly we have feeding stations in the forests in order to keep them there. We have 2 hunters in our village so we do have a supply for the freezer. They have become almost a plague in recent years in Germany with some being actually seen in built up places like Berlin and Hamburg - people feeding them doesn't help. We also have wolves in some areas of the former East Germany who are making their way slowly westwards - so the one could control the other in the not so distant future. Convincing the farmers here to tolerate the return of the wolf will be a difficult task I think.

Wolves are about in the south of France and are moving slowly north. The farmers are not at all happy as the animals are taking sheep. Some pictures on the French news showed where a flock had been attacked and numbers killed. I have seen wild boar within 50 m of our house but they do disappear quickly when they see humans.

Morning all from a slightly cooler France than it was this time yesterday. Went to a vineyard yesterday afternoon and did a bit of wine tasting - I didn't realise how different the taste would be between each of the years (2012, 2011 and 2007) from the same vineyard. In the evening we went to the night market in the town and had dinner in a restaurant that wasn't even open when I was last down here 3 years ago.

I am learning a lot from the Scottish Independence thread and trying to add my knowledge. Spurf is good to make me think. This is not in our newspapers a lot.

    where exactly are you Barry?

On the subject of wine tasting.... I am in my cynical phase around wine vintage etc at the mo. I have a garage full of it... and the wine can differ in taste several times if you keep it open for several days.... even a poor wine can taste great.. maybe it is all my taste buds!

GCSE results out today. I always feel sorry for the kids as, having worked like trojans, they get told that they're not really that good as the exams have been dumbed down year on year. Sure there's a debate to be had about the curriculum but it drives me mad that they do it on the very day we should be celebrating the success of the youth of our country. Mind, I might be slightly biased this year as my oldest niece gets her results today!

Fingers crossed for anyone else on here waiting for results from their loved ones.

Dan, as someone who designed, marked and moderated GCSE papers for many years, I am certain the notion that they "have been dumbed down year on year" is a myth dreamed up by politicians looking for a soundbite. Aside from the incredibly detailed testing of questions, careful weighting and comparisons with previous years' papers, there are overriding statistical analyses which make each cohort face very similar chances of success or failure. Good luck to your niece anyway...
