Have put a match thread up for Sat. Thanks for doing the vast, vast majority OFH. And, sorry for not being able to do many. Hope all fellow hornets are well.
Am sad to report that I won't be available for selection for the rest of the season. A late trip to hospital last night confirmed that I've torn an Achilles tendon - the same one that I ruptured 38 years ago while playing squash - so am confined to a moon boot for the next 8 weeks or so. If that is unsuccessful, more surgery will be required. I think my career is over...
oh poor you.........how awful...... I took approx 12 months to recover from mine....hope yours repairs quickly.
Oh dear, that is a blow. Mine done, playing tennis, was a straight to surgery, and eight weeks in plaster job. Don't do it again, I was told, so taking heed, I have never touched a racquet again.
That's probably the advice I should have followed - instead, after 3 months in plaster and 3 more of physio, I was back playing squash. Spent the next 8 years playing that as well as Futsal - only stopped then because we moved to a small town where neither was on offer.
Had a couple of interesting parcel deliveries this morning. Three weeks ago I decided to replace my smartphone - the one I'd had for a couple of years was fine as a mini-laptop, but terrible as a phone, no matter what I tried I couldn't get people to hear me when I rang them, and I could barely hear them. Two days later the new (well, refurbished) phone duly arrived, in perfect working order - but without the protective cover for the back which I had paid for.. So I fired off a complaint via email. Fed up waiting for a response, two days ago I ordered a replacement cover on eBay (at less than half the price) - and that was parcel #1 this morning. No prizes for guessing what was in parcel #2...
It would appear that the Christmas backlog at the Stroud sorting office might finally be cleared. We sent cards to a few friends and relations in the UK on the 14th December, and one that was going to Stroud was finally delivered on the 14th February.
Morning all. Some sunshine, but mainly overcast in rural France today. The wind turbines in the distance are not turning again, so there is not even a light breeze. A sign went up to say that the fields just outside the village are being prepared for a solar farm, which according to research carried out can provide a good habitat for bees and other insects. Along with sowing wild flowers, the bees will find farmers crops to pollinate, but it does mean less grazing for cattle, which is perhaps a good thing. A letter has arrived to tell me to book an appointment with the contractor working for the electricity board, as the whole of the Vienne is being fitted with smart metres. I will be able to link it to the computor, mobile or tablet, and read off just how much I have used and what it is costing. At this time of year, I would rather not know. Have a good day everyone.
After just one week I had a new 'moon boot' fitted yesterday - one with heel pads which keep my foot at a rather uncomfortable 120 degree angle. For some strange reason my family are now calling me Buzz Lightyear...
Morning all. Grey and cold, so it was not good to find there was no electricity. Is it just us, or is the whole village down you wonder, so coat on to see if the neighbours have light. They do, so it now comes down to finding the problem. After a lot of fuse testing, still nothing to indicate what the cause is. Eventually found that Mme was charging her tablet overnight, and when I unplugged that, bingo. I have never come across that one before, so have no idea why it has happened. I think she had better use a different one next time. Have a good day everyone.
An interesting story about a croc eating a shark in the Fitzroy River, which runs through Rockhampton, where I used to live. Back in the 70s I witnessed something similar while walking across the Fitzroy Bridge. I stopped to watch a horse trainer swimming one of his horses in the river, just as a croc exploded out of the water, grabbed the horse around the neck and sank out of sight. Unfortunately pre-smartphone days - but even if I had one, it would have been all over before I could get it out of my pocket to film it. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-02...fter-crocodile-filmed-eating-shark/103511294?
Needed to make a trip into town this morning, and was horrified to see the levels that two of the rivers are now at. One is just about to flood the camp site that it runs alongside of, while the other one has already gone over the banks into the picnic area, with the seats and tables not that far away from being submerged. Today is cold, but dry, and tomorrow has sun forecast, but then the next three days heavy rain is expected again. Gardens that normally have early crops appearing by now may have been rotorvated last month, but are now covered with weeds that grow quite happily no matter what the weather. Have a good day everyone.
After selling our house in Dunblane a year ago, we got the keys to our new house in Dorset yesterday, almost to the day we moved out of Dunblane and almost 21 years ago on the day we moved into our Dunblane house. I have to say I did not think it would take us a year to find a new house and we are not 100% sure we have now bought the kind of house/location we want but we needed to get settled and out of the 2 room Airbnb which we have been living in, lovely though it is. We are happy in Dorset having decided to move there. On the upside I can get to Southampton and maybe Bmuth in future easily for matches, Bristol C is within reach too. There is a Southern Counties Hornets FB group which is quite active. If you are in or around Dorset feel free to get in touch, a cuppa and a hornet chat will be available as a minimum and I won't ask Bolton if he has had his tea.
Hope you enjoy your new home - I'll refrain from making comments on the appropriateness of you living near the Jurassic Coast!! As for my tea, you can take it for granted that I will have had it - after being diagnosed with kidney damage this week, it's the only beverage I'm allowed to drink.
Which part of Dorset have you moved to Scully? My friend who we have stayed with lives in Stalbridge, up on the Somerset border. Last time I spoke to him, he was telling me that a milk processing plant had been set up nearby, which had made the traffic situation, which was already bad, even worse. I hope that you settle in well, and enjoy your reclaimed space.
