It was on the tip of my tongue to agree - also having a Peugeot 207 as my pride and joy, I had realised that that method of opening the door was impossible. But my pride and joy is no longer my pride and joy - I set off half an hour ago to take my daughter to work and both the steering column and driver's side shock absorber have given up the ghost. Replacing them will cost more than the car is worth, so to the scrapyard it is...
Didn't you have recent experience of dying cars BB? Remember your post about a clever driver reversing up your road.
I did - another French car too. This Peugeot was its replacement and has behaved perfectly until this morning. Have just called the AA out in the hope that my diagnosis is wrong...
Morning all. Damp and miserable out there today. Now waiting for my kettle to arrive. The tracking system says it is out for delivery, but it is not with the postie who has gone past. Sometimes it tells you which company will deliver and sometimes not. No such thing here where you are told that your goods are drop 78 out of 156. Good job we still have a reserve kettle that works, even if the lid falls off if you are not careful. Have a good day everyone.
Still damp and the sun that was forecast has failed to break through. My new kettle failed to arrive, and now told to expect it by Friday, and if it doesn't arrive by then they will give me my money back. This is not what I want. If I hadn't needed a new one I would not have ordered one. With the price of fuel being so high I can well imagine that a courier would not want to travel fifty miles from Poitiers to just make one delivery, so maybe that is part of the problem. Have a good day one and all.
Morning all. According to the man at the Météo it is overcast and no sunshine. The fact is that the sun is blazing down at the moment. I must make the most of it and cut up some more logs to bring indoors and finish drying out. Although stored undercover in the barn they do not dry out 100%. Trying to keep the electricity use down a bit as prices are going up here as well as in the UK. The government has some control here as EDF is 80% owned by the state, and produces enough to have a surplus it can sell. Have a good day everyone.
There are other new rules in the code concerning pedestrians and the one that annoys me is that you must give way to pedestrians crossing the road at a junction you are turning into. So you jam on the brakes as someone saunters into the road and the car behind shunts you!!! It's bad enough now with people wondering across roads plugged into phones. Also you now have to give way to pedestrians wanting to cross at a Zebra crossing, it is always not easy to stop at crossings sometimes. Personally as a pedestrian I think it is common sense not to cross a road anywhere if a car is nearby and not to consider I have the right to do so regardless of the safety of the situation. As for the cycle rules, my wife and I cycle and avoid any busy road like the plague and find the antics of some cyclists idiotic, so why give them more licence. I think the Sustrans maniacs have been at the Highway code. I do agree that your cycle infrastructure leaves a lot to be desired though.
On a more positive note we are back from Costa Rica after a fabulous holiday, highly recommended place to go. LF tests negative today too. Just need to recover from an 18 hour journey, jet lagged. We met a couple at Tortuaguero who lived in Herts, she was in the health service there and could not praise Watford highly enough for the support that they gave to NHS staff during Covid, she said they were amazing.
Morning all. Totally overcast, and more like dusk than mid-morning. Everything very quiet here today now that the workmen who were hard at it across the lane yesterday haven't returned. Think they make be installing some new shutters as the old ones have disappeared, but we will wait and see. Daughter also having a quiet day despite it being her birthday. Will pop along and give her a present. Have a good day whatever you must do.
Morning all. Not a cloud in the sky, but ice around after the overnight showers froze. Busy day with log cutting to do. Maybe the late kick off will suit me better than a 3.00 pm one. Daughter has car problems, all electrical. The prices being quoted to repair them are very high, and she now has to make a decision about if it will be worthwhile. It seems that cars are so reliant on chips to control this or that, you are going to be faced with a hefty bill if one goes wrong. Let's hope for a good display from our remodelled team.
Panic stations here this morning - after two short power cuts yesterday, what I thought was another one turned out not to be when I realised that only one side of the house had no power - a switch on the power board had tripped. Whilst I was fervently hoping the problem was with anything bar the TV/Internet, my wife was hoping it wasn't the washing machine - what odd priorities women have. After going through the process of unplugging each appliance to isolate the problem, I got my wish - but my wife didn't get hers. She had the last laugh though - the washing machine is well out of warranty and needs replacing rather than repairing. My suggestion of a few stones in the nearby burn didn't go down well.
Morning all. Overcast and windy today, so stay in and keep warm now that my log pile has been restored. Your tale of woe BB reminds me that my friend across the lane describes how he used to have a little cart that was used to take the family washing down to the bottom of the hill where the river goes through the fields. After the washing was done everything was spread out on the bushes to dry, then he had to put it back in his cart and haul it back up hill for nearly half a mile. Life was quite hard for a eight year old boy back then. Have a good day everyone.
Morning all. Mainly sunny today and I am pleased to say getting warmer. Last night I used some of my logs on the wood burner, and we noticed that they were burning as though there were a frost, which there wasn't. There must be some reason why on a cold frosty night they burn with an increased intensity, but I don't know what the science is behind it, or is it just a perception? Have a good day one and all.
Maybe it depends on what type of burner you have? The colder the weather outside, the stronger the draft - and the more oxygen there is in the burner - meaning the wood burns more quickly.
You could try looking ahead of you at a junction, possibly in the direction you are intending to take, and taking the turn at a sensible slow speed if there are no pedestrians. It is reasonable to assume that pedestrians at a road junction are probably going to cross the road. If someone hits you from behind, it is unequivocally not your fault (unless you are reversing blindly). Why is it not always easy to stop at zebra crossings ? If there is a vehicle in front of you, is it difficult to stop then ? I find the actions of many motorists idiotic , with far more risk to life and limb than cyclists. Why are Sustrans supporters maniacs ? None of the rule changes give idiots any more licence than they had before, which was none.
The changes are common sense and being an ex cyclist and motor cyclist I have always tried to do what they are saying we should do However, the biggest danger is that cyclists and pedestrians will feel entitled to do anything they want and the motorist will always be in the wrong One thing I have noticed is that where is the past a pedestrian would wait at the kerb on a crossing to make you had seen them and acknowledged when you had stopped let them cross now the younger ones just step into the road and glare at you Someone will get killed directly because oft he way the new regulations have been written
I have to agree, what with the way people address zebra crossings these days. I have noticed a change whereby pedestrians seem to think that stepping onto a crossing will act as a direct brake on the car. It’s perhaps an acquired misapprehension of the cause and effect when crossing a black-and-white striped part of the road? Some people don’t look up from their phones as they confidently stride out.
