It sounds like its going to be a wrench, but your bills for Harewood House must be astronomical.
Will you be able to retain the Butler ?

Morning all. Grey and damp and not very appetizing outside. There was a piece in the paper yesterday about a Lithuanian lorry driver who was hauled before the court this week. Driving his 40 tonne lorry from Spain en route to Denmark he decided for some unexplained reason to try and squeeze through the car only toll booth at Chatellerault. He completely demolished the toll booth, but continued on his way as though nothing had happened. Those of you who know a French toll booth will be aware that they are built to withstand a minor invasion, so it is a wonder that the lorry was still functioning. A two year suspended jail sentence was the verdict, and they are still working out what damages might be involved. Have a safe day. <ok>

Good morning all from a wet wet wet Yorkshire..
House Market here is crazy... Houses being sold the day they come on the market... The stamp duty holiday has certainly boosted the market.. But if course prices have gone up too...
We are struggling to find anything...
Mme is very specific which has made the range of houses and flats available very limited... Plus I need some garden and light..
    Have a great day

Morning all. Somewhat damp in rural France as well this morning. I see that I cannot have a stream via the Hive for this game as the overseas rights have been sold to numerous countries, including here. It should mean that somewhere there will be a stream on the internet. Trying to follow a game by text only is not very good as it is always too slow, although some are better than others. Must get out and visit the bread machine now before others get and empty it. Have a good day everyone. <ok>

Morning everyone. Mrs. Cologne has just gone off to her weekly French language course and will, as always, try it out on me when she gets home ! For the last 30 years getting fluent in German has been the priority and my school French has consequently gone out of the window - so these conversations will be short ones <laugh>

Move to rural Aberdeenshire. Houses here being a tad difficult to sell, prices are falling - and were far cheaper than in England to start with, as is Council Tax. Two of our neighbours have done exactly that. Both had smallish holiday cottages here - former fisherman cottages - and have sold up their homes in England to move here permanently - one from Filey and the other from London.

Failing that - I hope you find something soon...

The secret - if you can call it a secret - to retaining any language is regular use. Which is exactly why my school French went out of the window decades ago too.

Regular use is of course the best way of keeping a language up, which is why at the moment not meeting so many natives makes me feel mine is slipping. I have taken to watching far more French TV programs in an attempt to keep the sounds and rhythm going round in my head which helps. Another current problem is masks that prevent you seeing just how someone is forming their words. We do watch faces to see if the person we are talking to has understood, and when you realise that they haven't you can try and put it a different way. Masks are hiding these reactions as well as making words muffled.

I learn from friends in France who are (reluctantly) returning to the UK that in the Upper Charente at least the housing ,market has gone potty - Brits are buying everything they can. I tried to explain to our friends what a carcrash the UK is at present, but circumstances have forced their hand. We have really missed our little cottage , and trips to Ile de Re etc, as well as Aigues mortes, and hope we can get there before it becomes too difficult to travel (age, eyesight etc). We cannot live there permanently (comical heating , dodgy sewage system -which we have to replace somehow, very little social life between October and May) but are lucky to be able to think about returning. It's also closer to Portugal - home of son and grandson. They seem very far away just now. Still, we have a picture of him at school wearing his Watford top.
A bit of a lament -sorry , but at least the thing that binds us together (WFC) is in a good place.

Morning all. Sunshine and cloud in rural France with a stiff breeze. OK, it is very windy. Reading that Mex really does make me wonder just how far we have come with our civilization. For people to try and impose their will on others by either political or violent means is not the way we should be living in the 21st century. There is a short video that Simon Reeve made about Mexico showing the fight against the cartels, but maybe finishes with some hope.

Stay safe Mex and have a good day one and all. <ok>

Stay safe Mex - I can understand your feelings having been through similar myself, albeit a long time ago. For a decade the UstaĊĦa, a Croatian terrorist organisation, ran terrorist training camps in both Queensland and NSW - sometimes well hidden in the bush and sometimes 'hidden in plain sight' in popular BBQ spots. They were a nasty bunch but had the sympathy of the right-wing Aussie government of the day, even though they often used the Yugoslavian community for target practise. Keeping your head down is the safest thing to do.

Morning all. Wet and windy in this part of the country today, and now that I don't need it the water butts are filling up at quite a rate. From having no reserve a couple of weeks ago, I now have about 1,800 litres. We had thought about going down south for a week away until the virus started to take off again, so shelved the idea. I am glad we didn't go as there are scenes of dreadful flooding, landslides and roads totally impassable down there. So now the daughter has phoned as she has a puncture on the car and cannot move the wheel nuts. Hopefully the rain will stop before too long or I will get soaked. Have a good day whatever the weather. <ok>

Evening All. Mrs Fez and I have allowed ourselves out for a few days. Saw friends we've missed over the summer. We're in a chalet on the coast. Planning on getting a few walks in and a bit of sea air. Change of scenery, just what is required.
