I suppose the way to look at it, was the overall bill, including all charges worth it, if not then you don't go there again.

You even get it in the stores with some products (not all) the tax is added at the till. Although I've been to Delaware and they are a tax free state.

My two favourites places, who have added it, are well worth it. I don't tip now, but I pay the service charge which is discretionary, so if you really thought the service was ****, you could simply not pay it.

I'm guessing that was the deal with the one Chief went to, they've added on a service charge and he's rightly told them they aren't getting it, because it sounds as though the service (and the food) was ****.

Yeah Montana and Oregon were the same when I was there recently. I think that's slightly different to tips, in as much that those states don't charge a sales tax. But you're still offered the 'opportunity' to tip on every transaction. Even in fukin Walmart buying groceries they have the cheek to ask if you want to tip. Errr no... thanks but **** off <laugh>

Walmart <laugh> see they are just taking the piss. Yeah that's right I meant to say that's sales tax.

Think I just hate the whole service/tipping custom, put the charges in the menu, then if i think someone has earned more I will leave a cash tip...only because I don't want them paying tax on it....don't tell sucky this ffs.

I don't know if it happens in the UK, but I'm sure some countries in Europe apply a cover charge, so that means before you order anything you will pay a charge for sitting at that table, normally inside tables and not outside tables IIRC

Yeah it's ****ing nightmare just trying to pay for your groceries in some places, especially if you're using a card. First the machine asks if you want to add a tip, no thanks, then it asks if you want to donate to charity.... okay you've made me feel guilty as **** by this stage, but still no thanks. I only came in here for a loaf of bread, some eggs and milk ffs

We have 5 local restaurants we use, in the last couple of years 2 of them have added a service charge, one 10% the other 12.5%, we now have 3 local restaurants we use, we always leave a tip as the places we go, we know the service is good but it's a pet hate of mine them adding it on the bill. No other industry gets away with it, and it's not as if the workforce are badly paid nowadays as it was years ago.
Worse was in Scotland last year, went for a beer in a pub and they put a 10% service charge on for us going to the bar and them pouring and serving us a couple of pints, hence I didn't pay it.

I would go to somewhere like Publix for fresh stuff but I think they are mostly in Florida, whereas Walmart I think are everywhere.

There was a place in Sausalito, I can’t remember the name of but was an indie grocery (think $12 loaves of sourdough). I went in and got bread, eggs, milk, cheese, ham, crisps, a couple of fresh burrito type things, some chocolate and a few cans of soda. Sort of thing that would cost you about £20-£25 in coop and as the cashier was totting it up I could see the cash register going up above $90 …..and then the card machine asked if I wanted to add a 15% tip <laugh>

There are a couple more layers to this as well.

They made us order from the Christmas menu. So, there weren't that many options for teenagers. They wanted a burger off the main menu, but weren't allowed as they would he busy.

They weren't busy. Still couldn't order a burger though.

Oneiof the boys had 'upgraded' his bavette steak to a rump, at an extra £5. The steak frites (rump, obvs) from the main menu cost less than that upgrade though! Same thing, but more expensive on the Christmas menu.

They portions were then very small. They'd left space on each plate for, I assume, sides. Which were extra of course, so we hadn't ordered any.

Then, the service was not attentive. To the point that my eldest had to go to the bar to order another couple of pints, and we were waving over to our waitess as we wanted another bottle of wine, which took ten minutes to arrive.

We got the bill, and they'd circled the service charge and not tried to hide it.
But my Mrs asked if she could use here blue light thing teachers discount, to be told she couldn't as there were ten of us.
We said we were splitting the bill two ways so really it's was two families of five, but they still 'couldn't'.

So, we got our discount by not paying the £50 service charge, politely, which they didn't warrant.

I like to tip. But, as a few have already said, I can do that myself, I don't need it adding to the bill, they can genuinely **** right off.

    Won't be going back.

That's the nub of it really, poor service means you've lost that custom forever. And if you're unlucky, those people will tell 10 other people not to eat there too

Morning. Family birthday today which I’ve always thought is rude considering Christmas.
