How do you think he got the burns on his hands? I was wondering if they were caused in the car or as he climbed over that barrier (hot metal). Still amazing to see him walk out from a ball of flames, I did see some suggestion that the car splitting in two probably saved him, but whether that's bolloxs or not, I didn't look into it.
I would imagine the gloves are probably the weakest point in the fire proof outfit. They would need to be thin enough to give the driver dexterity to change gear and operate the controls in the car. Guy was very lucky really. If he’d have been trapped in that fireball for much longer, he’d have been fried. Fire proof suit or not.
Without the halo, his head would have come clean off, as the front for the car literally pierced the barrier.
Relatively, it’s been around for a couple of seasons iirc and it somehow remained intact. Also, the fire was apparently only a few litres of fuel in the overflow tank. The main tank which would have obvs been full, is protected by numerous cut off valves and pipe sheer points to stop the kind of explosions we saw in years gone by. That also probably saved his life. The fact that he literally walked away from that horrific crash, shows just how far that sport has improved its safety measures since the days when serious injuries / deaths were relatively common place. Incredible really. Here’s the cockpit he somehow got out of in one piece.
Although I wasn’t born when it happened. I’m still haunted by the crash at Le Mans 1955 when two cars collided on a corner, one ploughed into a barrier and burst into flames, but the engine was propelled into the crowd and scythed down scores of people standing on step ladders etc to get a better view. It killed dozens of spectators, utter carnage.
Did you know that F1 cars use 200,000 litres of fuel per season, each? Also the fuel is about 2.5x the cost per litre of fuel you put in your car. That’s about £12m a year on fuel. That’s nearly as much as I spend on mine!
Apparently the cars are designed to split into two but not in the way it did. The barriers are surely a big part of the problem though and can see them being replaced.
Yeah only been around 2/3 years and there was a lot of divided opinion about it all the time. That debate is well and truly over now lol.
Just chatting to my neighbour about justifying buying a 3.0 V6 and he says ‘oh I’ve just bought a new toy, it’s being delivered in about half an hour’ Then this tuned up on a trailer. He’s like a pig in **** lol.
