If you want an older small car, I'd be looking at a peugeot 205 or Citroen Saxo. There are loads of them about, they are pretty reliable, cheap parts and cheap to tax and insure.

As with any car you need to do your checks, google a used car check guide.

A Pug 205 in good nick will set you back a small fortune nowadays.

The GTI has become very collectable , but there are still some decent diesels out there. My missus used to have one. It had a 1.8 engine in it which was pokey as **** for a small diesel car, and it did something like 55 mpg.

Even a non-gti I would imagine would cost around 6x what a fiesta from 2000 would cost.

The old Peugeot diesels were like boat engines, you'd do well to find any French car from that era that wasn't a total rust bucket now, unless it'd had been restored.

I should have got the missus to hang on to that old 205. It was on a N plate and only had 45k on the clock. Bodywork was mint too.

I need a small engine for insurance purposes. First time driver n all that.

I was under impression that Fords would cheaper/easier to fix than a Citroen etc.

My old mum had a 90's vintage Micra. Great little car, never let her down. My brother and I tried to tell her we'd get her a newer one, but she wouldn't have it...

About the same really. You can get cheap parts from euro parts for pretty much most common cars these days.

Check out parkers online and do a used car review. It will give you a good idea of running costs, insurance, mpg etc.

How much have you got to spend mate?

1500 or so but I want to pay my insurance upfront.

So looking at 400-600 ish.

I only want it to last the year, get first years no claims out the way n that.

Get on Autotrader, a 206 might be a decent bet for you in fairness

Yep i forgot the 205 had been superceded by the 206. I'd also be looking at Renault Clio, Citeroen Saxo, VW Polo, Vauxhall Corsa, etc

Corsa is another one I'm hoping to view over the weekend.

Just make sure you do some basic checks. Google a used car buying guide.

Yeah I will.

My Uncle who used to be a mechanic/mot tester and now works in insurance is going to check that Fiesta out later so will see what he says...

Fun cars too. Love my little Blue Bomber.
