My mother was the oldest of 7 ...brilliant times growing up as one of 14 cousins in a close knit family. The downside is having been to way too many funerals ... one of my mum's brothers is still alive but in a care home after 3 strokes ... her youngest sister too and one sister-in-law. When it really hits home is when you lose the first of your own generation - went to my cousin's funeral in September, she was 58, 3 weeks younger than me, cancer of the Oesophagus... had already come through breast cancer in her 40s ... lovely lass, left 3 kids and had just become a grandmother for the first time. Her other two kids are just about to become parents too ... makes me incredibly angry if I dwell on it too much ... if there is a God, him and me will be having quite a heated debate at some point.
Well, this is a cheery thread! Just pouring a Glenmorangie watching some mad programme about who serves the best fish and chips, ever, (BBC2) skipping through your mutual tales of death & woe. It's cathartic. Anyway, my old man goes into Christie's, completely oblivious to what they will say, Manchester tomorrow. We'll come out tomorrow with 'the verdict'. **** knows. 01.15, another large malt is in order. Night.
I think the ones promoting Haddock won. For all you north eastern chaps. Nice fish but..... Cod should win every time, always.
Completely agree . Mrs J has purdey a 20 year old moggie . Getting thin and tone deaf , struggles with her bones in the cold . She's eating , purring , going into the garden when nrs j is out there . She will be gone in a few months and it will break mrs j's heart when she does . But the last thing mrs j will want is for purdey to suffer . Like we said when we said goodbye to jasper last year , you know when it's time to say goodbye .They are relying on you .
Haddock always costs more...the difference in taste is minute. Cod for me too...it's the dodgy ****ers that try to sell off Alaskan Pollock as Cod that piss me off. Hang them
Not something I eat very often, but I used to go for Skate in the chippy as they always said you’ll have to wait while we fry it. Suited me as at least I knew it had been freshly fried. Not sitting under the glass for the last hour.
Best fish and chips I ever had was in Mevagissey in Cornwall - Hake & chips ... couldn't believe all the different fish the chippy on the harbour had - ordered Hake and the bloke said - "if you just have a walk around the harbour (it's a working fishing harbour) it'll be ready when you've done the circuit" ... sat outside on a bench looking over the harbour on a bright and sunny March day noshing the freshest fish and chips - sunlight sparkling on the water - the missus had cod - everything was absolutely delicious ...
Yeah, cheers. Will be a long day today. You can't beat Cod in a seaside location. There's a good few decent chippies round where I live and they do fish really well. I don't think Plaice suits being battered in a 'fish & chips' scenario myself but each to his own of course. Cod is fantastic though.
Have you been to the chippy right at the very end of the Mumbles? ... went there what must have been a couple of years ago now and it was quite decent - although it was a bitterly cold day, pissing down with rain, and we were all starving - that tends to magnify the culinary experience
I'm sure we've had this conversation before, I think you're talking about Yallops? There is a better one, Johnny's. It's in a back street terrace so not on the main drag. There's now also a seafood hut (that's it's actual name) on the prom that does superb stuff. Freshly battered whitebait is very nice.
Best chippy I’ve had was rick steins chippy in padstow. Had lemon sole, it and the chips are fried in beef dripping. Was tremendous. Second best was a chippy outside Paignton they battered their chips. ****ing marvellous it was.
