I believe it's gone to the monopolies commission and that Morrisons and Tesco are jointly going to try and block the move.

Wall mart are looking to offload Asda to Sainsbury's so they could concentrate on competing with Amazon..

My mistake, the deal is complex so hasn't gone through yet..<ok>

You are correct though Joe. Walmart want to offload ASDA, they've realised it's a big mistake, it's now about who owns the distribution networks and two of the big players of that i guess has to be Sainsbury's and Amazon when it comes to distribution.

Would have to be that way otherwise the distance code would kick in for fair competition. That is why Safeway was bought up by all 4 of the major supermarkets a few years back..

Walmart want out of Europe, they've already pulled out of Germany.

There's not much between Asda and Sainsbury. Tesco are the big boy.

Sainsbury distribution has been well oiled for years, Amazon relative newbies in effect but after a few early mishaps, they certainly seem to have mastered it now..

Personally I think Tesco are a bit dinosaur now, rocked by profit scandals and seedy employees, their own range food being not so good anymore and stores that are a nightmare for a quick get in and out. I can see the competition being stronger this next year against them..

I agree, they do their thing very well indeed. Some of the Ham and Salami, cured meats etc they stock is top quality European produce. And a lot of the fish they sell is MSC certified. I'm lucky that I can buy most of my meat, fish and vegetables locally because I live in an area with a wealth of quality local produce and I work alongside a lot of local food producers. But I shop in Lidl and they knock socks off of Tesco/Sainsbury's/ Morrisons etc. Also my bill comes in around 2/3 of price of the others too.

I'm a bit uneasy about this whole merger deal mate. Although it shouldn't affect me (can never be 100%)

I look at mergers as being a bored mans toy to another mans plaything, there will always be profit in selling food but online competition now is rife, an organised online digital creative team is a must, probably why Amazon are wiping the floor with most. For too long shareholders have reaped rewards from the old established supermarket chains and kept their self honorary status intact because competition was always stagnated. Times have changed, the future will be a lot different..<ok>

My thinking is, and always has been, everyone needs to eat..I'm not overkeen on this merger. But i don't work in a store, where jobs will 100% be hit.
