James Beattie was Garry Monk's first-team coach at Leeds United for a year. please log in to view this image Former Leeds United star Chris Wood raised plenty of eyebrows last season when he went from being a pretty average Championship striker to arguably the best in the whole division. By virtue of the fact that the 26-year-old bagged 30 goals last season and only managed 13 during the whole 2015-16 campaign, you could argue that Wood, who earned himself a £15 million move to Burnley, came on leaps and bounds in a very short period of time. The reason? Wood claimed to The Independent last December that working alongside James Beattie, who was Garry Monk's first-team coach at Leeds, helped take his game to a new level. please log in to view this image Beattie, who managed 91 Premier League goals during his top-flight career, left Elland Road with Monk last summer, but you wonder if Kemar Roofe could have hugely benefited from working with the Southampton legend this season. Roofe, a £3 million signing by Monk 18 months ago, has managed 11 goals from a striking role this season, but he also missed more big chances than any other Leeds player and although there is obvious talent there, he needs a bit of work. please log in to view this image The 25-year-old is a lot more comparable to Beattie as a number nine than Wood was and therefore it's probably reasonable to ask whether Beattie could have had a huge influence on the former Oxford United man, who played on the left wing under Monk. He has only just turned 25, so Roofe definitely has time on his side with regards to getting better, but based on Wood's evolution under Beattie, it's entirely possible that the United striker would be a better goalscorer now had the 39-year-old stayed on in West Yorkshire
Welsh League side Rhyl FC have been fined by the Welsh FA for their part in the pitch-battle that saw the friendly with the Leeds United under-23 development squad abandoned in November. The Welsh FA have fined Rhyl £200 and given players Jason Jeffries and Tony Davies three-match suspensions for violent conduct. The flashpoint occurred when Jeffries and Leeds youngster Bryce Hosannah tangled that resulted in players from both squads becoming involved. Leeds coach Carlos Corberan refused to continue with the game, returning the squad back to the changing rooms. Leeds have been given a warning by the English FA for their part in the fracas.
