I dont disagree with you at all there glory, theres an argument that the fact its pretty much expected that you go to University these days devalues actually having a degree, and in a lot of cases means that you have to go on to further study (like a PhD) in order to get some of that uniqueness back and be qualified for certain things. And I'll tell you PhD's aint cheap and you can't get a nicely packaged "pay us back when you can" student loan for them!

Eldest is a teacher did bsc in psychology and page, just done her first year as a teacher and loves it.
Youngest has just graduated with a BA first in history, and is now of to york to do a masters in medieval history, and is then going to do her doctorate. Wasn't sure about the value in four more years of study. But she is getting nods and winks from her uni of a job as a lecturer at the end of it. Starting salary of £60k!
Rather hard of me to argue with her as that is the career she wants.

Just wish the bank of mum and dad could stop bank rolling her.

Yeah PhDs are pretty much necessary if she wants to stay working in the academic world. I'm doing mine now so that I can lecture in a few years (not doing it straight away). What we borrow from the parents in money we give you back in pride though right :D (and money when we get real jobs... <laugh> )

Can't spend pride. But got to confess to having a tear in my eye at both graduation ceremonies.

The tear was due the cost of the mrs needing a new outfit, dinner and a night in the hotel/bar.

    Doc

I dont see what being given an unfair advantage over other clubs, has to do with Blackpool's present position.

I'm not arguing that they didnt receive an unfair advantage nor is it right that they did so, but I believe that if this had been Leeds we were talking about, I would have wanted the football authorities to pull out every stop they could to ensure that we would be able to play in the premiership, and if this required short term funding assistance, then I would hope that we got it, as opposed to being refused promotion and forcing the club into administration and possible folding of the club.

Forcing Blackpool into administration by not allowing them promotion would not necessarily have changed the overall control of the club from the Oystons, it didnt stop Bates retaining control of Leeds, and as I mentioned it didnt stop Stephen Vaughan retaining control of Chester under his son, despite Vaughan being the first club owner to actually fail the Fit and Proper Person test.

If you are saying that the Oystons are getting what they deserve, then I agree with you.

If you are saying that Blackpool are getting what they deserve, then I disagree with you

If you are saying this situation wouldnt have occurred if the FA/FL hadnt assisted then I disagree.

What you have to remember whether Owen Oyston would pass the FPP has nothing to do with it, yes we all know he is the money man behind the club, but legally he has no involvement with the club, the club is controlled by his son. Even if his son Karl had taken Blackpool into administration, he himself would not fail FPP, unless he took the club into a 2nd administration, so your first two initial arguments that Owen Oyston is a vile corrupt evil person, which in my opinion I would agree with, are invalid. You can't blame the authorities for not getting rid of Owen Oyston, as legally he wasnt involved to be gotten rid of, nor could they get rid of Karl Oyston, as he would not fail the FPP.

However say the FA/FL had done as you say and refused promotion, how exactly would that help Blackpool and its fans.

    Potentially

    1) the Oystons place the club into administration and Blackpool receive new owners ( we will presume that this is a positive outcome)
    2) The Oystons put in enough money to keep the club ticking over and avoid administration for a couple of years (similar outcome to what they are facing now, so overall neither a positive or negative outcome)
    3) The Oystons put the club in administration and retain control and find themselves playing in league 1 (for the club and fans this would be a negative outcome)
    4) The Oystons place the club into administration and no buyer is found and club folds (negative outcome even if a phoenix club is formed)

Given those options (and yes I'm sure there are more), I would want the authorities to do whatever they can to assist the club and its fans,if they are in a position to do so.

She won't get a starting salary of £60k, I guarantee it. Senior lecturers don't get that sort of money. That's Prof. territory.

I might be being obtuse, but why does a PhD cost money? When I did mine many years ago the research council paid the fees and gave me just about enough money to keep me in dry bread and water. I still work at a university, and I don't think I've ever met a self funding PhD student...

I've self funded half of mine. Pleased to meet you. (and that's in sciences around 60-70% of my friends doing arts PhDs have self funded the whole thing)

Unfortunately there just isn't enough research council funding to go around at the minute

Weird. I interviewed a couple of candidates for a CASE studentship in nuclear decomissioning recently (not my area; long story) and they both went for funded studentships elsewhere. Which was embarrasing.

    What field are you in?

Computer Science, don't get me wrong there is funding out there - I should have gotten an extra years funding than I did (another long story, not for a football forum!) I just know a lot of people self funding, so believe me they are out there too!!

The one year masters course has to be paid for. £6k... But having got a first and two prizes there might be a bursary if me and the mrs weren't earning too much in 2008? Decision pending!

To be fair she works Weekends and through holidays and has kept some student loan so has the £6k saved already. She even has her train fares saved and will commute from here to york... So we will continue to provide the free hotel.

The three year phd is funded and there is an option to take paid work at the uni. Or at least what she tells me.

Great that she's got funding for the full 3 years, and there is usually option of doing some paid teaching. That's what I did to help fund mine, as well as working on the side too. I managed to save quite a bit in the 2 funded years I had to help out when I didn't have funding too.
