Wouldn't be fair for me to give an opinion of him as I've never seen him play, but I'd like to think he couldn't be any worse than Doukara out wide
We're not counting the league cup as it wasn't a full strengh team,if it had been he would have scored at least 2.And yes we can ignore any game we like because we are cool.
Read back over the post and sorry you're wrong... Kiwi never stipulated championship goals, not that it matters as it was an opinion not a statistical fact. On his debut Sharp scored for us, 1 in 1 but you can't say anyone thought he would score 46. If wood fails to score next match he will be averaging under 20 goals based on your theory, if he scored a hat trick his average will increase to a goal a game but you wouldn't be silly enough to bet on him netting 46 in a season. But going back to the original point of my original comment... Kiwi has an opinion that Wood will not score much more than 15 goals so for you to comments that he isn't good at maths was uncalled for as it was an OPINION not a statistic.
I don't recall mentioning league anywhere, I just said I don't think he'll break 15 this season. If he does, then great, I'll gladly hold up my hands and admit I was wrong. I'd be delighted to be proven wrong. To me, he just looks slow and cumbersome: He doesn't win nearly as much as he should in the air, and he doesn't use his strength to his advantage, but he is a nuisance and that alone can grab you a few goals at this level. I see him as more of a Matt Smith than a Mark Viduka - and for the record, I liked Smith, but he wasn't the type of player to grab 25/30 a season at this level.
I'll admit I ended up recording the game so I could go out drinking and watched it the following morning incredibly hungover (so please note I was not in the clearest of minds) but I didn't think Wood played badly to be honest. I actually thought he was challenging in the air unlike other games, his movement was good especially for the goal and when he got himself clear of the defender for the headers (shoulda done better with the finish) which is always a good sign for a striker. He also had some nice touches and link up with antenucci at times. The thing that amazes me is that everyone thought Becchio was the best thing since sliced bread but he had the control of a solid brick wall and hisheaders went anywhere and everywhere. Used to get the easiest of tap ins so was loved by everyone yet Wood is getting stick currently 4 games in. I think our biggest problem in that game was a lack of speed about the passing in the final third.
Becchio scored lots of goals by being in right place, he also scored lots from different angles and distances.....
Becchio was ****. Knew where the net was so it made up for it. I'm saying Wood has gotten 2 goals in 4 starts which isn't bad but people are still getting on his back which I feel is unfair.
Even if he scores 20, there will always be people moaning. FFS we are unbeaten in the League, IMO we need one win to start the ball rolling. I'm positive anyway...LEEDS LEEDS LEEDS
Thee's no doubt that Wood has his failings. If he was perfect, or even close, we couldn't afford him. We really do have to give our players slack and stop having this world class expectation many of us seem to have. However, having said that, I was going mental at one stage in the match. Wood passed the ball to the opposition on 5 occasions in a row (and possibly more before I started counting this particular run). I'm not talking about challenging for a header & the ball landing at the feet of the opposition - I'm talking about attempted passes of various lengths that were telegraphed & intercepted, or simply passed straight to an opponent. Very poor IMO, especially as we then have to go win the ball back again. As I recall, this count was in the latter part of the first half, but he was consistent with his poor passing throughout the match. Something he really needs to work on, I think.
Josh, no malice pal....., You seem like the type of person who either likes or dislikes a player, if you don't like him, then no matter what that player does he's going to be crap. Becchio was bought as a striker, like you said, he knew where the net was, which is the reason he was bought in first place and became a great asset for Leeds. I'm sure you, like a lot of others celebrated every time Becchio scored a goal. Morison couldn't score a goal if the goal was the width of the pitch and as high as the stands, yet some kept saying he should be picked every time; I couldn't see why other than Redders being an arsehole and bias. Thing is, we all have our favourite players, which is fine, and we all expect different things from those players, we all look at players from different angles and sometimes, those angles cross each other. Becchio came into his own when Beckford left, he is in the top 10 of all time great Leeds United goal scorers, 1 goal behind Mick Jones, which is something Beckford or the falsely so called great McContract never achieved, and Becchio did it in 4 seasons. The year Becchio left, he had scored 19 goals before the season was half over, I suspect he would've achieved 30 to 40 goals had he stayed till end of season. I'm sure we could do with a Becchio now.......
Didn't take any, and didn't intend any either. And I'm also not saying that Becchio wasn't useful. That was in fact my exact point, he was useful. He was terrible though, lost the ball more often every game than I could count. BUT he scored goals and therefore was good for the team. People are criticising Wood for losing the ball too much, he keeps the ball far more often than Becchio ever did and I doubt Becchio would have been unhappy with 2 goals from the first 4 games either. See how he develops and if he keeps scoring a goal every 2 games I don't think anyone will be displeased. I actually think a return of 15 goals for a player in his first season at a club wouldn't be considered a bad season either. I wouldn't be looking at dropping him at all like some have suggested especially as right now it seems he needs the confidence.
Its not what they can necessarily but how many they can offload to their partners he reminds me of Bobby Smith who teamed up well with Greavsie. For the record I think he will do well
