I agree with wonky's last point, negative thinking though it may be. Blackpool almost got it right in terms of avoiding last payday prima donnas, as did Burnley before them. In a worst case scenario, where we do go down, the nucleus of the current squad would stay put, so with a little tinkering, would be expected to mount a serious assault in the championship. If we do stay up, there will still be money in the bank to strengthen further should Lambert feel the need. As long as avoid doing a Hull (Bullard/Geovanni) or an 1p5w7ch (Finidi George ) we'll be fine either way
Quite suprised by this thread. Blackburn have done brilliantly to sign Dann and pairing him with Samba does make me quite envious. Wigan signing Shaun Maloney...lol. Couldn't get a game at Celtic and was w*nk when he was at Villa. Not bothered. Swansea not sure who they bought but they are a decent outfit will wait and see QPR signing SWP and Anton lol. There both sh*te and no doubt overpaid. Barton is their best buy but come 4-5 defeats on the bounce I can hardly see him helping improve morale!
Didn't mean to sound negative Cromer. Just we need to be cautious. We won't have to panic sell and we won't be over paying in terms of wages. Look at what happened with Bullard and hull. Couldn't afford his wages so had to loan him out. The situation certaintly didn't help Portsmouth either.
what i will add is that i believe the only really good bit of business done by any of our closest rivals was the signing of scott dann to blackburn. a very capable centre half who alongside samba means rovers have great organisation at the back. however, the rest of their team isn't exactly great! barton is a good signing for rangers but only if he really wants to be there - i get the feeling he doesn't. wright-phillips is no better than pilks or bennett to be honest, just earning about £50k more a week. other than that, would you honestly want anyone other than maybe barton or dann to have joined us? i don't think so. lambert did his business nice and early and avoided this ridiculous final day. i read somewhere that we are now firmer favourites for the drop because 'norwich didn't really add to their squad during the transfer window'... hey? i thought we added 8!! just cos we didn't panic means we are now certs for the drop? yeah right! if anything, it should make us more likely to stay up as we have had a whole summer to work on the squad rather than throw millions at players on the final day. check out the master - sir alex - what does he do? oh, thats right - he gets his team together bright and early. common sense!
also, blackburn's manager is an accident waiting to happen... ...and i'm not just talking about his driving habits
Absolutely agree with you 100%. By far the best way to do business. The squad we have will certatinly have us in contention to stay up (although I personally think they will do much better than that). When January comesPL will add where he sees necessary, but again, it will be early Jan.
