Anyone watching the England/Scotland U21 match? The Scotland goalkeeper, who plays for Spurs, is having a shocker of Meola-esque proportions. :(

Does anyone remember Peter Gibbs? He played for us in the mid-seventies. I have no memory of him at all.

I think you are a decade out NZ.;) Blink and you would have missed him, but did find out this about him.

"In one of the strangest of Vicarage Road departures, Peter Gibbs was only 20‐years‐old when in September 1966 he
announced his retirement from the professional game after keeping goal in a 4‐0 defeat against Cambridge United, saying
that he lacked the required dedication. He’d also played in the last three Football League games of the previous season,
conceding only one goal in each."

I still cant forget that game against West Brom. Richard Sneekes takes a corner, Epsen goes to catch the ball and palms it into his own net (with no players near him)!! :emoticon-0120-doh: Good job we had Sir Thomas of Watfordshire who got us out of jail that day.

Scott Loach had a game like that for England u21's v Germany. Germany won 5-1 I think and 2 of the goals Loach let in were completely his fault.

Tony coton for both categories but i must agree with Yorkie - Steve Sherwood was a decent keeper and a wonderful servant to our club. I remember the home game against chelsea the mid week after the debacle at Villa park and he played out of his skin and was as vocal as i ever saw. That game was also notable for a wonder strike from Nigel Gibbs.

Reckon I saw Peter Gibbs on the field, not many can say that with such a long career! Turned out to be a decent BBC weather forecaster tho.
Why does no one mention Jimmy Linton ? cos with one or two notable exceptions yer all too bleedin' young !

Andy Rankin for me, he played at a time when success was a strange concept--- indeed we dropped down the leagues, he stayed loyal, and was a fine servant to the club.

Sorry ofh, it was 1976 as Cambridge United were not in the League in 66. I was at both of the Cambridge matches in which we lost 1-4 and 0-4 in successive seasons. Gibbs played in 4 league matches for us, letting in one goal in each of the first 3 and 4 in his final match at the Abbey Stadium.

From when I've been watching, it has to be Almunia. That double save was amazing

Mitch, are you thinking of the Euro U21 final where we lost 4-1? If Hart hadn't been an idiot and picked up his 2nd booking of the tournament in the semi-final penalty shoot-out (yes, England can win on penalties) then Loach wouldn't have even been playing. Even in the warm-up he looked extremely nervous.

My personal choice of best and greatest has to be Pat Jennings, but Tony Coton & David James come close.
