Thanks for the thread Mr GB. I enjoy lists and seeing everyone's selections. A choice of best players over the last decade isn't as easy as it sounds since the players didn't play throughout the decade as Steevee suggested in his earlier posts and in respect of some, the peak of their careers was towards the start of the decade, following which their contribution to the team quite naturally began to diminish. Then there is the element of personal choice too so not unlike Mr Cannontotheright I would like to split my choice to who I think and who I like GK - Lehman / Seaman DF - Toure or Cashley / Keown MF - Viera / Pires FW - Henry / Bergkamp
You tried this argument before and made a total fool of yourself. You really show your lack of football knowledge
They were both World class and there is no much between them. You obviously don't remember the Bergkamp of the earlier years. Bergkamp could do things with a football that Henry could only dream of. Bergkamp had better touch, vision and passing than Henry. Henry had better finishing. Henry himself said that Bergkamp was the best he ever played with.
Trust me, I'd be here all day if I had to post youtube clips of Henry's creative genius. Henry creates a lot more goal scoring chances than Bergkamp with the way he made space for the likes of Pires, Ljunberg and Bergkamp himself. Henry topped the league assist chart a good couple of times in addition to being top scorer.
Opinons, opinions..... I'd put Bergkamp just about ahead of everyone in world football in the late 90's. There were better midfielders and better out and out strikers around but no-one had everything that Dennis had. We are lucky to have had two complete legends grace our kit and fall in love with our club, whether you/I think one was better than the other is irrelevant
"I have always said Dennis Bergkamp will remain the best partner I have ever had. He is a dream for a striker. He is not greedy — you saw that on the second goal [against West Brom on Saturday]. He could have just gone for glory because it was Dennis Bergkamp Day — but no. He dummied the goalkeeper, cut the ball back for Robert Pires who put it in the back of the net. The most important thing is the team. That is why I admire Dennis, and that is what he has been doing for a long time. I have always said he is the best guy that I have played with. Sometimes you have players who do not have to talk, you just have to watch them — and that is the case with Dennis. If you are in the game, on the bench or watching on TV, you want to learn then Dennis Bergkamp, with the way he can kill a team with one pass, is just amazing. He will sometimes do things out of nowhere." Thierry Henry "Nobody will ever forget Dennis Bergkamp - and everybody who will play in this position for years to come will be compared to Dennis Bergkamp. As much as Thierry Henry is a top target striker, Dennis Bergkamp as a provider was unique." Wenger
I made a total fool of myself for claiming Henry was better than Bergkamp? My definition of a lack of football knowledge is anyone claiming Bergkamp was better than Henry. That's clueless.
Thank you Magic Man for this quote: "Nobody will ever forget Dennis Bergkamp - and everybody who will play in this position for years to come will be compared to Dennis Bergkamp. As much as Thierry Henry is a top target striker, Dennis Bergkamp as a provider was unique." Wenger See Wenger thinks the same as me
''whether you/I think one was better than the other is irrelevant'' Apologies, just re-read this and it sound arrogant/dismissive - wasn't meant that way at all. What I wanted to say was that whatever you, I or anyone else thinks, I believe we should be grateful that two great players represented us for as long as they did, and the whole 'Who is better' argumnet is meaningless because they both frequently won games for us and were major contributors to our successes at the time. I feel better now......
The only thing I agree with their is Bergkamp had better touch. Then again Cantona, Le Tissier and Zola had better touch than Thierry but weren't better. I disagree Bergkamp had better vision. Henry's flick, swivel and volley against Man U is probably the most underrated goal in Premier League history and was as good as any goal out there from Dennis.
You're obviously not old enough to remember Bergkamp's goal for Holland against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup
Agreed, and at least it is a debate - in a couple of hours time I'll be home and that's when debating ends because I'm always wrong apparently.....
Really? Henry has topped majority of polls for the greatest player of the Premier League era and topped our very own club website poll on the greatest Arsenal player of all time. I must have cast all the votes.
It only goes to show how many youngsters like you contribute to polls on the Arsenal website. You haven't answered my earlier question. How many times have you seen Bergkamp play ?
