Glad he won, but have some sympathy for him, should be the best day of his ife but he can't celebrate, even if he wanted to.
Yes . His words after he crossed the line , full of emotion . Like Big Ern said , should be the best day of his life , but he can't enjoy it .
I had to wait for Channel 4 today. I have read all the comments and can't really add anything of value beyond being really pleased for Charles. This weekend he will remember for the rest of his life, unfortunately with some sadness. I am sorry he probably doesn't feel like celebrating, like having his youth stolen. I raise my glass to both him and Hubert.
This is quite funny/naughty/accurate from Lewis: Hamilton, who chased Leclerc to the flag, also acknowledged what a strong job the 21-year-old had done all season against his Ferrari teammate, Sebastian Vettel. “His results speak for him,” he said. “It is not easy for any driver to jump into a top team like Ferrari against a four-times world champion with God knows how much experience and then to continuously, race on race, outperform, out-qualify and out-drive him.”
So very pleased for young Charles, fully deserved win. Thought for a while after the last round of pit stops that Bottas might just have a good chance of the win, with fresh tyres and plenty of laps left to take Hamilton then on for the win? Guess I should have known better, finishing 9 or 10 seconds behind Hamilton shows just about where he is in the grand scheme of things?
I sort of agree, but this constant “Vettel has had his day” stuff annoys me a bit, as it really underplays quite how good CLC is. Anyone watching him through all the formulas saw we have a special, special talent at play here. Probably at least Hamilton good. So let’s not consign Vettel to the bin too quickly. We should be praising Charles here. He’s very good.
Sorry I wasn't meaning to put down CLC as I think he has really got the best out of the Ferrari in a way that Vettel doesn't seem to have been able to do. Just listening to him after quali where he said that the team said to use a tow but he felt tyres were better in free air that he could manage. Shows ow much he is thinking not just doing what he is told by the 'experienced' team. Shows a great level of maturity, self belief and skill. I am not sure about Vettel, ever since the hybrid cars came in he doesn't seem to have the little extra he had in the pre hybrid era. It's almost like his skills were a perfect match for the pre hybrids and somehow he is 98% there but not 100%.
Oh I know you weren’t having a go - it’s just a continuous theme of “Vettel has gone” that exists throughout commentary across the sport. I think it underplays Charles’ ability. As a Southampton fan, it’s like on the odd occasion we beat a ‘big’ team, it’s always because the big team played badly, never that we played well!
I thought Lewis seemed to be looking at Charles on the podium while the music played noting his behaviour and perhaps interpreting his mood. Lewis has respect for Charles and I think he felt for him, losing a friend as he did yesterday. Charles has delivered today, Vettel must know the guard is changing. Ferrari must know too. Charles did well tactically too, pulled out 2 to 3 seconds very quickly and then eased to preserve the tyres.
I know It's probably contrary, but I wish he'd have been able to celebrate... Even if the other two stood back while he spray that Champaign in in the air to celebrate his friend. It had to be hard for him today, to stay focused and take that maiden win. I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to take it like that. Shows how strong he is. It's been a strange weekend. One that will live in the memory for a long while.
LeClerc belies his years in many ways. A real star of the sport and dealt with the most challenging weekend with real dignity and courage. Bravo young man.
On a lighter note, Bottas managed to spray himself in the eyes after swigging the Champers! I am sure the emotions will still be there this coming weekend, in many ways they were all in shock this weekend, in 7 days it will begin to sink in. At least it won't be the same race track.
