I think it’s the rule (and was then) that if any outside item enters the field, game is stopped. It technically shouldn’t have counted, but I doubt there was a fan of any side who actually knew that prior to, or even at the game. Refs may have but it’s a nothing rule with no emphasis. Sky reporters had to look it up too.
