How much is he on a week? Yeah but it’s all relative, I probably earn more than some people but would still move for a big pay rise (provided the job was roughly equal).
I think it says more about how little ambition Saints currently have and how much Villa do. Who in their right mind would want to stay at Saints after the form of the second half of the season.
The gap between you and other people though, is probably about a few thousand a year. Danny was on about 75k a week, so I imagine the contract we offered him was probably closer to 100k. Dunno what Villa offered… 120-130k maybe.
Yes, quite normal in my experience. The number of times I've heard so and so has left and I've not heard about it till after the event is pretty common. Truth be told, I don't do heroes generally so don't get attached enough to care. Sir Rickie was special, as was Le Tis but I don't get attached to passengers
If that’s true you’re talking about a 20-30% pay rise, a big jump. It wouldn’t be big enough to make me take a **** job or do something I didn’t want to. But for the same job I think most people would move.
I agree. But most people don’t earn millions of pounds every year. Going from £400 to £500 I wouldn’t begrudge anyone. But how much more than £100,000 a week do you need?
It’s not about heroes, it’s about standards Celebrating your dream move to your local boyhood club then showing no commitment to fulfill your contract so you can leave for a bit more money and also not thanking the fans who supported your renaissance is falling well below the standards you should set for yourself Never surprised, always disappointed ... and then we move on
My point is that it’s all relative, to us we may see someone on £100k a week and think they don’t ‘need any more’. Just like someone might look at my salary and say ‘he doesn’t need that much’. Technically we don’t need anything more than basic necessities, but we all strive to do the best we can.
That and also when you are earning a fortune, you spend a fortune, so yes, you do always want and technically need more as you have higher outgoings. That said, he will likely have a huge wedge in his piggy bank, and has a secure future, but I cant begrudge anyone wanting more money.
I don’t think it really is. There is a cut off point beyond which if you have any financial and budgeting sense you really don’t “need” any more. It becomes “want” at that point and I’m not knocking it But it really isn’t comparable at all. I just don’t agree that is relative in quite the same way
You don’t have to spend a fortune if you earn a fortune. That is crazy talk. That is why so many football players end up bankrupt 2m in savings at a 5% return (generous perhaps) earns you 100,000 a year for life. Well over double the average salary and enough to live comfortably assuming you get your costs under control (basically pay off your house) All premier league football players should be able to achieve this quite easily at a minimum. The average premier league salary appears to be over 2m a year after tax. Average. Once you get beyond it is all want and about being flash or trying to go out with someone who wouldn’t go out with you otherwise and the like It really isn’t the same as the average guy on the street moving from a 30k a year job to a 40k a year job. Sure the relative percentages are the same but the comparisons end there
For disclosure - I don’t begrudge him moving for loads more money and would absolutely do the same But these comparisons to normal working people? Not for me Clive
Relative to a point. But does an apple cost a professional footballer £50, or is it still 50p? And you’re right we do all strive, but I think most people - when they are comfortable - start to place importance on other things in life. I’ve done it many times myself. Is Ings not comfortable that he has to bank that extra little bit more? Anyway, let’s just agree to disagree. Neither of us will budge I feel
im not saying you have to spend a fortune, but his outgoings aren’t going to be like ours are they. Why is it about being flash? He can afford better/more expensive things that most of us would do if we had the money. That’s like saying someone earning £10k pa would be thinking someone earning £40k pa is being flash, when their not, maybe just making the most of what they have. The more you earn gives you access to other things, I just don’t think it is flash. still don’t agree with you last sentence either, I get your point by why shouldn’t he want or take more money if offered. What are people supposed to do turn it down thinking about what people may say about it
You just did - with the 10k vs 40k example immediately above . It is not the same but I don’t think I will convince you of that Sure their outgoings are higher . But they absolutely don’t have to be. Are footballers really like the bankers in American psycho where they all compare their suits, business cards and restaurant reservations despite all making fortunes due to out of control egos?
