It just shows what a great bloke Danny is - and not having a big ego like he's been accused of. Blackmore also says Ings isn't interested in leaving Saints for a West Ham or an Everton. If he leaves he'll go to a club playing in Europe (for more than 1 season). Which I think is more than reasonable.

So he’s probably leaving on a free then or signing a new contract if he’s not turning in hot showings by January. None of the CL teams are going to be in for him before the start of the season. I don’t think there’s any of them who can justify it. Like I’ve said before, this is Jamie Vardy-lite.

I think there's more chance of Danny signing a new contract here than leaving on a free next summer now.

I think of the two, that looks more likely now, but things can change. If he gets sounded out about a big opportunity for the end of his current deal then, well, money talks at that phase of your career.

Ings/Blackmore may say he’s not interested in Spurs, but if Kane goes and Ings has the chance to be Spurs’ first choice striker, on more money, in London, in one of the nicest stadiums in the country, of course he’d go for it.

Same probably goes for Arsenal. Who knows whether or not either actually go in for him though.

It’s positive to hear he’d not be interested in a West Ham type move but don’t be fooled in thinking he’d turn down someone like Spurs.

Exactly. He’s on the merry-go-round. At the moment, nobody needs him enough to pay. If other players start moving things will change. It’s hard to predict.

Sounds sensible. On the other hand, it will cost us big to bring in a ready made striker but sign a good prospect, keep Danny, do better in the league and there could be a 20-30m difference between top 10 and 16th. We've recouped more than we would have got if we sold him and in that season the new striker gets settled in, plays a few games and is ready to start as his replacement in 2023.

Of course all this is moot if an offer comes in for CL football because that's when Danny will expect a deal to be struck.

So Danny, who has refused to sign new contracts for a year has refused the biggest contract offer ever made to a Saints player because he wants to play champions league but a champions league club have never made an inquiry about his availability and he's willing to sign a new contract though hes consistently refused to do that and oh, by the way he's not interested in going to West Ham, Villa or Spurs even though they could all be competing for CL football next season.

This sounds to me like an awful lot of agent bullshit that's got nothing to do with Danny (or other clubs). Presumably he's been told by his agent that there's interest from these clubs that aren't Villa, Spam or even Spurs. Its a scramble now to make Danny look like a good 'un after 12 months of making him look a bit egotistical and mercenary. Apologies if anyone finds the terms egotistical and mercenary insulting to modern footballers.

What next for Danny Ings and Southampton?

Ever since Danny Ings made it clear he would delay the signing of a new contract with Southampton in the hope of a bigger club acquiring his services, a dark cloud has followed him around.

Questions of “Will he sign?”, “Who would buy him?”, “Is he good enough?”, “Does he fit in at Manchester City?” dominated social media.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s pre and post-match press conferences tended to be littered with enquiries about his star striker’s future, with the Austrian seemingly on autopilot when he had to speak about it.

If Southampton lost, the uncertainty around Ings’ future was perceived as a reason why. If they won, then surely the England international wants to stay. You get the gist.

For what it’s worth, the 28-year-old striker remained fully focused on his football, leaving contract discussions to his representatives, but the dark cloud always lingered.

At some point, though, a decision had to be made.

And it’s just as well, then, that the heaven’s opened on Monday, when The Athletic revealed Ings had turned down the offer of a four-year contract, which would have made him the club’s top earner.

As the players returned for the first day of pre-season training, a moment that marks the end of their summer break and the time they get back on the Premier League wheel, you would have forgiven them for bombarding their team-mate with questions.

    That wasn’t the case, though.

Sources have told The Athletic that after a brief discussion with senior figures upon his arrival, the issue was put to bed and everyone got on with their day.

While many of them share a close bond, Southampton’s players make a point of leaving contract talks out of their conversations. In other words, they respect each other’s privacy on that matter and don’t want to be seen meddling.

It was suggested that the former Liverpool striker looked “calm” at all times and went about his business as usual. But what happens next will arguably be the most fascinating development in this saga — and it’s safe to call it one now.

As far as Southampton are concerned, they offered Ings a contract 14 months ago, and the only thing missing from it is his signature. That deal will remain on the table and the club want him to sign it.

Nobody doubts his professionalism and that for as long as he dons the red and white shirt, he will give nothing but 100 per cent to the cause.

The club, however, will have a decision to make if another side makes a move for Ings.

Can they risk losing a striker, who has scored 46 goals in 100 games for the club, for nothing next year and miss out on a transfer fee this summer? Well, if that offer doesn’t match Southampton’s valuation, then they will.

Sources often point out the cost of relegation compared to the cost of Ings leaving as a free agent as an example of his worth to Hasenhuttl. Essentially, a striker of his quality can be the difference between staying up and going down.

Since the offer of a new contract has been on the table, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Aston Villa have all shown an interest in signing him. But the 28-year-old has his heart set on the top table.

And this is where it gets interesting:

If it gets to September 1 and Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool haven’t come knocking, what does Ings do next?

Can he risk entering the final year of his contract in the hope of landing at a big club next summer? You’d expect an injury-ravaged or goal-shy campaign would put an end to that dream.

And would that mean he returns to the table and accepts the offer Southampton made last year?

Although some supporters will feel sympathy towards the club, moving players on to bigger and better things forms part of their modus operandi.

Players join Southampton knowing that if they perform for two or three years, then there’s a good chance they will get sold. It’s one of the reasons why the club can sign highly sought-after names such as Mohammed Salisu, Romain Perraud and Kyle Walker-Peters.

So, you could say it’s not a surprise Ings wants to hold out for pastures new.

There are also wider issues to consider when discussing the Southampton striker’s future. It’s not just about whether he stays or goes.

Senior figures at the club are actively trying to find a buyer, and you could suggest the unrest surrounding a key player creates concern amongst potential investors.

It’s also worth noting that the hierarchy have a thankless task of trying to give Hasenhuttl the tools to succeed, ensure the players are satisfied, add to the squad, sell the deadwood, balance contract talks and make sure the fans remain optimistic for the 2021-22 season.

And the news that Ings turned down a new deal can cause an issue to everything listed above.

As it has been the case for the past 14 months, though, Southampton’s offer will remain on the table and until the day the England international is pictured holding up someone else’s shirt, they will remain optimistic that he will extend his stay at St Mary’s.

Agreed but unfortunately I think it will be Levy negotiating hard with us right at the death. If Kane goes Danny’s a shoe in at £20M (ish) & assuming a “top 6 side” don’t surface, he’ll be gone. As above, awesome stadium, more £, Europe, better chance of success, etc. Even if Kane stays I still think Spuds might see him as a perfect backup. Hopefully I’m wrong & he’s here next year.

Simple thing to do there is to not negotiate to the death. Give any party that is interested in Ings (that also interests Ings) an iron-clad price, and a cut-off point a week or more before the deadline. And then stick to it.

I still think be will go on a free next season. If he has a good season then id expect most of the top clubs would want Danny Ings as a back up on a free transfer.

If he doesn't have a good season, or it is ruined by injury, then do we even still want to offer an injury prone 29 year old a 4 year contract to make him the highest paid player in our history?

Is this the same The Athletic that said Danny was close to signing a new contract back in October?
