I find his portrayal of Capone a little over the top - but it may well be truer to life than De Niro’s in The Untouchables. My absolute fav in Boardwalk Empire is Agent Van Alden aka Mueller - talk about a transformation
A horrifying film, Oddy, brought tears to my eyes. What the hell were we doing, and still are doing, in the god-forsaken ****hole? These brave soldiers who served there will never be forgotten.
Yep - the human cost is immeasurable - not to mention the financial cost. I also found the film harrowing but at the same time the camaraderie amongst the troops was somehow uplifting - even when the worst was happening. Struck a real chord with me.
So true, they even had the courage to briefly joke and laugh in the most ghastly circumstances. The film certainly increased my hatred for some of the world's 'leaders', a few of whom hardly knew, or know, where Afghanistan is?
Looks like a film right up my street this... Quick link to the Wiki page shows that it didn't resonate with people going out to watch it mind, taking less than $35,000... Kajaki (film)
Just a short bit of nostalgic jazz piano from the late, great, Erroll Garner with the opening number at the 'Concert By The Sea' in California many years ago. Always loved the way he 'gears-up' before actually starting the first piece in the concert, "I'll Remember April" Erroll Garner: "I'll Remember April" (concert recording) - YouTube
Am looking forward to Season-2 of "Vienna Blood" (tonight on BBC2) after enjoying Season-1. Darn good acting in the first season episodes, which gave a good insight into the early days of the 20th Century** in the Austrian capital. By no means a cheap production either, plus some splendid acting. What I do like is that each episode carries a completed story, as I hate waiting one week to see the next episode of most TV thrillers/dramas. Living in mainland Europe I cannot get the BBC iPlayer (they really do effectively block it!, even though you can be quite willing to pay extra for the facility.) Season-2 has a total of 4-episodes, each one a fully-completed story. Onward to this evening! **Edit: Sorry, probably a bit earlier, 1886/1890 or thereabouts?
You should check out "The Alienist" Swan Hills, if you can locate it. I think it was on Netflix. If you like Vienna Blood - you should enjoy this every bit as much. Based on the book by American historian Caleb Carr, which was a very good read. They have done a terrific job with the series so far.
Sad to see the death of Michael Nesmith. Much underrated and usually described as a member of that manufactured group the Monkees and that's it. In an age when most 'groups' are manufactured that's a bit rich. Nesmith was a fine guitarist and good songwriter with an excellent voice. Here is a stripped down version of one of his most famous songs: just him and a steel guitarist (the wonderful Red Rhodes). Michael Nesmith - Different Drum - YouTube
Thank you for the clip. Phew, just beautiful in every respect. Orchestration superb. (Not lucky in Germany to give New Year greeting too early, so we get along with the words 'Guten Rutsch', which means a 'Good Jump' or 'Good Slide' into the New Year. On checking, I understand the word 'Rutsch' is actually Yiddish, or possibly stems from an archaic German word meaning 'Journey'.)
I've just finished watching the last series of Sky's Gomorrah and I have to say it has been an absolute masterpiece. If you like the Gangster / Mafia genre then this is a must watch.
