Just re-reading another Christopher Brookmyre book and came across this little nugget: "What's the definition of a Scottish homosexual?" "A man who prefers women to drinking and fighting"
Johann Strauss II - Overture "Die Fledermaus" (Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Zubin Mehta): (For me a perfect musical description of Vienna, my favourite orchestral overture.)
Got to admit that althought Strauss is very liistenable, it's not that interesting to play if you're a lower brass player. For me personally, any of the Wagner overtures never fail to do it for me, both listening and playing, especially Tannhauser. I know Wagner wasn't exactly the nicest of people, but I think his music is brilliant. Will post a clip when I'm on the laptop and not a poxy phone
As promised. Performed and conducted by possibly the best orchestra and conductor ever, in my humble opinion.
And here are two versions of what I think is Wagner's best piece to both listen and play. The sheer power at the end is awesome, especially with an organ giving full belt (techincal music term there ) And this version was transcripted for brass band and is performed by Grimethorpe (of 'Brassed Off' fame) I was lucky enough to perform this at a massed bands concert with Grimethorpe.
Thanks for the comparison between the second pieces of Wagner of which I was unaware. Bit of a philistine on the classical music front apart from my love of Mozart and Beethoven piano sonatas plus Chopin's piano works. This stemmed in the 1980's from the soundtrack of the movie Frances which had a Mozart piece as a recurring theme throughout the movie. Anyway, thanks for the image of my third favourite Bavarian 'folly' after the 'Wiesn' built up for either the Fruhlingsfest or the Oktoberfest and secondly Linderhof. A very pleasant start to the day.
Sometimes these things are set up, maybe this is, maybe it isn't. The renowned boogie man Brendan Kavanagh gets stuck in with the old bloke.
Randy going for a curry challenge. Can't help thinking this will look the same leaving his body as it did entering
I just finished watching the excellent Chernobyl series.Great cast and well told story, highly recommend it.
Yesterday one of the greats of R&B, Rock and Boogie, Mac "Dr John" Rebennack passed away aged 77. The 6 time Grammy winner, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and one time heroin addict died as a result of a heart attack. Dr.John's Stagger Lee.
Pretty sure I 'invested' the most I have ever spent, apart from box sets, on a double CD by Leon Russell ....'Gimme Shelter; The Best Of Leon Russell'. Never regretted it despite already owning two other CD's by the great man.
In my waste length hair, long beard, kaftan wearing, hippy days, Leon Russell was a freakin' god. Leon's version of Hard Rain stands alone for me. Brilliant.
Thinking about Bob Dylan covers you should check out Mountain's (Leslie West) version of Masters Of War.
I saw Mountain in Edinburgh in the early to mid 1970's; along with Led Zeppelin and BAP (Kolnisch rock), the finest live bands I have ever seen. The Rolling Stones (once with my Mum), Bruce Springsteen, Nils Lofgren, The Clash and Tom Petty close behind.
I suppose while we're in a gloomy mood, we'd better have a bit of the 1965 Barry McGuire classic Eve of Destruction.
