Wasn't much on poetry at school as a nipper, but I did like this short piece by John Masefield, Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1930 to 1967. ……………….. 'Cargoes' Quinquireme of Nineveh from distant Ophir, Rowing home to haven in sunny Palestine, With a cargo of ivory, And apes and peacocks, Sandalwood, cedarwood, and sweet white wine. Stately Spanish galleon coming from the Isthmus, Dipping through the Tropics by the palm-green shores, With a cargo of diamonds, Emeralds, amethysts, Topazes, and cinnamon, and gold moidores. Dirty British coaster with a salt-caked smoke stack, Butting through the Channel in the mad March days, With a cargo of Tyne coal, Road-rails, pig-lead, Firewood, iron-ware, and cheap tin trays. ………………..
The artist George Bellows said of fight crowds. "The atmosphere around the fighters is a lot more immoral than the fighters themselves.” Both Members Of This Club. 1909. At the time, neither a black man or a poor white would be allowed membership of these clubs. The fighters were made made members for the night only. These men would tear each apart for the gratification of the blood thirsty crowd. The faces tell the story. please log in to view this image
Could not think where else to make this request. I am off to Paris in May for the horse racing and will be taking the Eurostar back to London where I will be staying for four nights. I hope some of my co-respondents are resident in London. I am looking for some advice on Art House Cinemas in the centre (?) of the city. Can anybody give me some suggestions on easily reached 'Kinos' from the King's Cross/St. Pancras area. Ta.
Reminds me of golfing holiday a few years back, the entertainment in hotel one night was can can girls. I said to one of older guys what would ye do with one of them back in yer room tonight, break my heart crying was his response.
Kenny, it's donkey's years since I went to the then No.1 avant-garde cinema in London, namely the Curzon, Mayfair. Used to have some super stuff on in the old days. They are still around apparently, here's some miscellaneous info: Curzon Cinema, Mayfair: 2-screen arthouse cinema focused on independent and foreign films, with royal boxes and a bar. Address: 38 Curzon St, Mayfair, London W1J 7TY, UK Phone: +44 333 321 0104 (Erm, as a visiting Scottish dignitary, Curzon may well give you a discount on a royal box with bar?) -------------------- and an example of current fare on offer: https://www.curzoncinemas.com/mayfair/this-week .................... Hope you find this info. useful. Regardless, have a great time in the city of my early years, i.e. my old 'Smoke'!
Might be attired 'a la Bayerisch' so I might obtain the preferential treatment due to a Bavarian dignitary! Will bear this in mind. There is the usual Cineplex at The Angel and an Art House Kino in Shoreditch but I will bear your suggestion in mind. My culture ventures assume I can trust myself to leave the hotel room for anything but grub during the final two days/evenings of my holiday.
Descendant of Ludwig II, why not? Shoreditch? Hmm, bit downmarket for a visiting Scottish/Bavarian dignitary?
Bingo; your suggestion is twice a hit. The Curzon, Mayfair is not far from my 'target' on the Saturday (day 2) of my visit. I always pop down to the Coal Hole on The Strand for lunch during my stays in London. There is also the Curzon, Bloomsbury (5 screens) which is within walking distance from the Premier Inn, King's Cross. The current program suggests this is exactly what I am looking for. Thanks.
One must sample all walks of life to understand and accept one's advantages in life's trials and tribulations!
Yes, but Mayfair would be more becoming for your royal Scottish/Bavarian bloodlines, says snobby SwanHills!
Jeez; I will soon be discovering that I am the last living descendant of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene..... I allude of course to 'The Da Vinci Code'.
Ah yes, now I remember seeing, at the Curzon Mayfair in the early '70s, one of the greatest films ever made, the Oscar-award winning (for foreign language movies) 'The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie', Luis Bunuel's surrealist masterpiece. Just read one critic's review at that time where he said the film was not just about 'charm and good manners', as such, but the complete indifference of the ruling class to the woes and problems of ordinary folk. An extraordinary movie, think I'll watch it again sometime soon over my Amazon 'Prime' Video link.
Oh dear my very good chum, we must belong to the 'elite' who the Brexiteers are so fond of disparaging. An afternoon of Claude Chabrol or Eric Rohmer awaits this sweet prince of both his homeland and overseas Heimat!
Well actually, Kenny, I am far too much an entrenched Liberal to be classed as 'Bourgeoisie'. In fact, at the risk of getting into trouble yet again, I had a feeling there was a similarity with the forum right-wingers/Brexiteers on here, even though they often lack charm, their manners are not always appropriate, but they most certainly show a complete indifference to the daily problems facing the ordinary working men and women in the UK? That's it. I'm out of this discussion...…………..
