Around 9 AM on February 5, 1960, little Steven Walls, aged 4, wandered off and became lost in the wild New England Ranges in New South Wales. His disappearance set in train one of the biggest search parties in Australian history. Some 4,000 men, women and children combed the rugged country side for four long days. Armoured cars from the nearby Army base joined the search, as did half a dozen aircraft. Hopes for Steven reached a new low when on the third day, a plane reported sighting carrion birds circling over a gorge.
