Liverpool reject £25million bid from Man City for Raheem Sterling.

Oh dear. That's a shame. One of the big clubs coming in and trying to steal one of their star players. I''m sure Man City could go to £30M. Perhaps they could entice Sturridge away too..? I'd leave it as late in the transfer window as possible, for maximum effect. :)

Never bought into the “proven PL” theory, players moving between premier league teams flop just as often as players coming from abroad. Look at Lovren/Lallana last season compared to Alderweireld/Tadic as an example. As for proven PL goalscorer, Bent going from Sunderland to Villa springs to mind.

If Austin costs anymore than £10m I would steer clear.

Couldn't disagree more, Lovren/Lallana is just one example to suit your argument and they haven't been used very well (to be fair to Adam he's been injured alot as well and hasn't actually done too bad and I'm sure will improve next year as well). I would take Austin in a heartbeat and would love for us to get it done early, and pay anywhere up to £14/15m for him. Reckon he would definitely bag 10-15 league goals next year, Only Pelle done that this year.

Liverpool sign Bogdan on a free.

Wonder what it is with these free signings, you would think they were rinsed of all their cash last year or something <laugh>

And as much as I don't rate Pelle ,where did he come from? If you scout players thoroughly (which we appear to do) then I would sign a player from abroad nine times out of ten over a PL equivalent because they will be half the price. The positive in this Austin scenario is that QPR got relegated and could need the money to pay this fine they are facing, so might not be a ridiculous fee.

Why can't we sign both? And is that Spanish striker pronounced "You and me"?

I think you have taken Saint Magic's post too literally. I think he is saying it is just as much a chance that a player won't succeed coming from another Premier league club, as he will succeed. It probably is 50/50 and you have to rely on lots of things such as our Black Box equation that tries to cover as many mitigations as possible.

    There is no guarantee

I don't understand this, Austin would cost less than double what Pelle cost, will (arguably) score more goals than Pelle, and is 4 years younger? I understand you weren't making a direct comparison just pointing out the flaws in some of that.

I do think there can be more value when signing abroad but it can always be a gamble, Dani was a big name with loads of talent and how did that one end? I think Austin would be a good solid signing who would instantly improve our team/squad and add another homegrown player (don't know about others but I enjoyed having a lot of English players in the side).

Sometimes I think people on here don't want him because his name isn't Charlee Austiniho!

There's no guarantee (never is) but I'd say all recruitment is 50-50 in any industry not just football. But I think with signing someone who knows the league, you have a much better chance espescially as we will know everything about him anyway and we wouldn't just be signing him cos he's flavour of the month (Like Villa did with Bent).

EDIT: Note I'm not against from signing players from abroad as there's more value for your money there, I just think people are dismissing Austin cos he's English n he's come from non league and not 'fashionable', yet if someone had said that about our Rickie a couple of years back the same people would be spitting feathers!

Why? You think some people don't dismiss some players because they're English?

**** me you need to slow down with this quoting me flt I'm supposed to be working <laugh> <yikes>

So we agree on something then ? :) It is pretty true I feel though, obviously not exact but a pretty good benchmark.

I don't think so on here, no. We have one or two who I would suggest dismiss a "Johnny Foreigner" a bit too eagerly, but I don't think people on this forum dismiss English players because they are English. Some may think there is better value for money outside of signing any player from an English club (English or not), but I don't get a feeling that people here are dismissing English players. Maybe I have missed something.

I don't think many of us have that type of prejudice though. At other clubs I am sure they may, but not on this forum.

I'd take Austin and I would guess he'd be a big success here, but as we have said - no guarantees. The price would need to be right based not just on his "value" but also considering the number of players we may want to sign, versus the budget we have.
