What did Rickie say, in that interview when he left? Something like "It all could have been so different", when asked about leaving Saints.
I think that is when I lost respect for him, not as a footballer, but as a person, for not elaborating on that cryptic comment, and the manner in which he said it, implying things were not right at SFC.

I'm not sure he was alone. Most people didn't imply it; they were shouting it off the rooftops.

I didn't comment on any football forum last summer but I read plenty and I saw a lot of people completely lose their reasoning capability when it came to commenting on Saints. I think it would be mildly embarrassing for many Saints fans to look back at their comments last year. Why should Rickie be any different?

Add into the mix the fact that he had been fed a particular spin from Pochettino and his cabal (and potentially Cortese). He's only human to have been swayed by it.

Hope this is the right move for Stephens. Not so much regards his ability, but with regards to how many CB's Middlesbrough are hoarding and how many games he'll get. Looking at both the number of other CB's in their squad and the number of games they played for them last season (below), he could have his work cut out to play as many games as we'd ideally hope.

Gibson - 41
Ayala - 38
Kalas (Chelsea loan) - 17
Woodgate - 9
Williams - 2

That said, looking at the rest of their squad (and some reports on here), it may be that he's going to play DCM as they're pretty thin in that area of the park. Certainly hope that's the intention anyway as he'll get far more games there.

Not sure it would have really made any difference to his decision to leave for Liverpool even if as you say "things could have been so different" line he would have still wanted to leave.
I'm sure Lambert knew exact what he was getting himself into moving to them, and if only playing a handful of games for his hometown team was his inspiration for the move then he got exactly what he wanted, but personally for me you only ever saw that move as doomed. But he can now say he played for Liverpool in the prem to his grandkids, and then tell em he moved to WBA lol

I think this is perfect. If we'd have been the ones to pay SRL and watch his game time deteriorate last season, well I could have lived with that, but letting the friendly bin-dippers pay up his football pension for a year then letting him go to WBa seems far fairer, no heart ache here at all. Good luck to him.

I understand they play three at the back as well, but that was only reading some boro fans reaction to the signing. Boro are amongst the favourites for promotion so it's going to be an exciting season for him and they play great football under Karanka. Very pleased with the clubs we've been sending our players too

I'm actually pretty surprised Rickie agreed to the move, honestly thought he would just see his contract out at Liverpool and retire, regardless of playing time.

Hasn't Woodgate retired ?

"Look Rickie. We aren't going to play you next year. Take the move and the transfer fee is all yours" Is how I imagine that conversation went.
