We never win the first game of the season so Hughton is just upholding a long standing tradition

It could have been worse......a fat bloke & his son could have run on & thrown there season ticket at our manager?
That would have been a first !
But being serious for a minute I hope there is going to be a heck of a lot of buissiness on the transfer front this week !

OK, I've been shot at on here for my comments about the pre-season friendlies and the way we played! You can't tell anything from these games they are friendlies after all I was told.
Well I spotted it right from the word go, as did a few others on here, no midfield commitment to going forward, midfield playing too deep, leaving the lone striker stranded, meaning the defence just booting the ball up field to no one in particular. What the hell is the point of Snodgrass being in the right back position, and Pilk's being left back? This was reminisent of the AJAX game, 6/8 across the back and no midfield! Howson gets lost and drifts out of the game, and Pilk's just doesn't look interested? 3-0 down at halftime and we wait until the last 15 minutes to put Hoops on? Superman says we need a HOLDING MIDFIELDER, I agree, but we also need to sort out the midfield in general, what is the point of playing two wingers if they are going to drop deep and not be able to get crosses in? That was horrible to watch, if these are our tactics then it's going to be a very very very difficult season!

I commented on the match day thread before half time that we were making Fulham look as good/better than Ajax. Nothing they were doing, more the things we weren't.

Eight men - two banks of four defending and 3 times we get caught out by long balls!
Riise (full back) had the space, time and luxury of spending more of the game in our half of the pitch attacking than in his own half defending. WTF??

If this is indeed true it makes for rather nasty reading, defending in numbers and still conceding 5 does not sound like a team in tune with its manager.

We simply cannot start games with neither Fox nor Hoolahan starting, it's creative suicide, simple as that. Also chuck in the fact Holty doesn't get going until September rolls around so as soon as I saw we were playing him up front on his own with no Foxy or Wes I knew we were going to be in for a long afternoon. Didn't quite expect what did happen, but to be honest I'm glad we got stuffed 5-0 rather than the odd goal because if it had been a closer score it would have masked a complete and utter tactical failure yesterday.

    Holt on the bench next week, and for the next few weeks until he gets his sharpness back and shifts those last few pounds (same as the last three seasons!) with Moro and Vaughan starting and either Wes or Fox has to be in from the start. Not sure I'd go with a diamond just yet however, I'd probably go with;

    Ruddy
    Martin Bennett Turner Garrido
Bennett Howson Fox Pilks (even though he was **** yesterday)
    Moro Vaughan

A lot of work for Benno and Pilks getting up and down, supporting the defence in that formation, but they should be up for the job and the key is that they can get forward enough to get into positions to be able to whip plenty of balls into the box with two hungry strikers with points to prove desperate to get on the end of them.

It certainly can't be worse than that shower of **** yesterday anyway. I was alarmedby the apparent lack of interest shown by two many of our players, Tierney spent the afternoon ball watching, and on the evidence of that I'm not sure where these 'ten goals from Snodgrass' are going to come from, I know it's only one game but he looked horrifically out of his depth if you ask me.

I was wondering how long it would take before we got a "Grant Holt is too fat" comment

There's certainly room for improvement, cos that was possibly the worse we have played for a long time. Even in our thrashings last season we still looked hungry. As stated above, good to get this one out of the way early

Taken me a bit of of content there beef, can you honestly say he was looking match fit and sharp yesterday? Or for the first half a dozen games of any of his previous three seasons with us? My missus only saw match of the day and her first comment was that he looked big and slow, and I can't see how anyone can disagree on the basis of yesterday's "effort".

Grant Holt got nothing from the midfield yesterday, we already know he can't play up front by himself, he wasn't the problem yesterday, but he is a big target when things go wrong. First thing people were saying yesterday was "should have sold him" like he was the problem yesterday, I think the problem was the two lines of players behind him. If we sort the midfield out he will score.

Oh I agree Beef, certainly wasn't attempting to blame Holty yesterday and agree he was far from our worst player. My point was more of the tactical disaster of playing him up front on his own, particularly when history tells us he's never anywhere near his sharpest at this stage of the season.

I think with support he'll do well, I think he's in better shape than last year, but he simply doesn't do 4-5-1. His build and play suggests he should be able to but he just can't, it's weird.

Vaughan or Morison would vast improve this. I think Morison looked ok when he came on, unfortunately the damage was more than done by then.

This is something that has been identified by many a Norwich supporter, so why does the manager decide to try it out again? Surely he must be aware, having watched lots of DVD's over the summer, that has not worked in the past. I nearly held my head in my hands when I saw the line up (having already predicted a 3-0 defeat) I felt as if I didn't really need to watch the game beyond that point (I did of course watch it though <wah>)

What? There were many fans, including me, who never wanted Hughton - simply on the basis that he has never achieved anything which would support his appointment, and, clearly, in no way be described as a 'young, up-and-coming manager' to compensate. To me and many others, his appointment was bizarre, citing a lack of tactical awareness, a decided lack of management experience given his age and a distinct lack of success.

The pre-season was dire, yet the lamentable defending rhetoric appareared to focus on similarities with Lambert's record in such games - completely missing the point; it wasn't the results which were the problem but the dire style and lack of any tactics other than seemingly hoofing the ball up from defence to Holt, by-passing the one core strength in the team ie the midfield. The players looked lost, confused and unable to understand what was expected of them. Unfortunately, yesterday was exactly the same - bilge, orchestrated by an incompetenet and clueless manager. Can it be resolved? Who knows? It's too early to say but we have lost two key ingedients of last year: The tactical brilliance of Culverhouse and the players' huge desire and hunger to fight for their manager. Possibly, some of the players are at fault too for there seems to be a psycological difference for many in the challenges of the first and subsequent seasons as a Premier League player ie a possible mentality of having less to prove. I hope Hughton can sort it out but I won't be holding my breath...

Look at the bright side, at least we cant mock each other? We are both bottom with a -5 goals.

    TBH
Even if we had won 5-0, i would have said its only the first game and we all have a lot of games ahead. <ok>
