It is a fact that my opinion is that Halsey would bend over and let Fergie stick red licorice up his bottom which he gave to his players to eat as half time snacks.

A case would only be brought if it had, or was likely to damage the reputation. Once in court the first thing to establish is whether the statement is true [based on published or known facts] if it is the claim is defeated.

Maybe the FA told them they had to sign Moyes because of the match fixing... end result the same.

My brother is a solicitor and to put an end to this OT horse **** he's read this thread and said what Johnsonsbaby has stated is closest to the facts of online defamation. Its a bit more nuanced but he said, in general, unless it was something like the BBC or SkySports with huge audiences and ability to influence, online defamation is almost impossible to win. He said its way all Journo's and employee's of Sky/BBC etc are made to write "my views not that of my employers" in their twitter bio to protect them and their employer from defamation/libel.

Let that be an end to it now and get back to the absolute disgust of a Premier League Referee contacting a Premier Leaue Club Manager to "ask for a favour"!!! WTF??!! That is the most unethical thing I've heard of in this league, except the possible fixing scandal of Segers/Grobelaar (i believe it was pretty obvious they done it based on the video evidence).

You CANNOT ask a Premier League Manager, any Manager, for a favour as the first thing this leads to, when like in this case when the said favour is granted, is the obvious follow on question/presumption of "Well what did the referee do for said Manager in return for the favour? Not give a pen? Give a Yellow when should be a Red?" etc etc.

It is irrelevant whether the favour was returned, as just creating a situation where these questions even need to be asked/considered is enough to bring the game and that said Referees reputation for impartiality into disrepute.

Does this still go on between players/Managers and Refs still? It is an absolute outrage and why the whole of the footballing family in this country aren't up in arms about it I have no idea! Even TalkSport have want to town on it and their hardly of good repute etc.

The FA/PL need to take action now to make sure more stuff like this isn't going on and set punishments in place for this type of behaviour if it should happen again.

Just goes to show doesn't it?

Wonder how they repaid him for his kind words and influence.

Brilliant. We've all said he's been in the game so long that he almost is the Premier League. He wields so much influence.

And here it is for all to see.

****s - the lot of them.

Oh, and before some smart Alec mentions refs accepting gifts, that IS different. Gifts such as mementos and keepsakes have been given by home clubs in European ties, for instance, since time immemorial and MUST BE DECLARED (eg, signed shirts, pennants and souvenirs for auctioning for charity).

And they both suddenly retired this summer with the media buzzing of astonishing intercepted text messages that couldn't be published because of Leveson...

    <ok>

Sort of got away from the point of the thread by answering someone who said Halsey could sue for defamation.

Totally agree you can't ask a manager for a favour and Halsey shouldn't have leaked that bit of information but I'm not going to call him as the man's lucky to be alive following his health issues and I regard people who've had personal struggles like that as off limits. [again I'm probably a majority of 1 with that view]

    It stinks to high heaven.

However, we have to stay focussed on what we're doing now as what's done is done.

This will get brushed under the carpet as he's a national treasure now.

On a side note - all of you opposition fans banging on about libel.

If you wish to do something about it then please do.

Until then this is under the mods jurisdiction and I say it stays so be quiet <ok>

    Nooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I watched both my parents die of cancer. My sister is recovering from chemo for breast cancer, and I've seen several work colleagues over the years pass away through this illness (and heart disease), some of them close friends. NOT ONE OF THEM EXPECTED TO BREAK THE LAW AND GET AWAY WITH IT BECAUSE OF THEIR ILLNESS!!!

No, no, no! Absolutely happy that he 'beat' his illness. Glad when anyone does. Doesn't mean he is allowed to avoid the scrutiny everyone else should be under in the same role.

    Never said otherwise <ok>

Just re-read my post and it is confusing. He will be dealt with by whoever by whatever means felt appropriate but what I meant was personally, I won't verbally abuse him.
