IF this is true, that Dowd tapers his decisions depending upon who does or doesn't try to influence him, he's not fit to be a milk monitor in the school playground, let alone a highly paid (yes they are now) 'professional' referee. He should make the right decision then deal with the characters he feel unduly attempted to influence him accordingly (i.e. give the physio a red - and Distin too for the Gerrard non-incident if that's the game we're playing). There'd be two players left on the pitch, and none on the bench, at the end of each derby if that is the new standard.

Dowd bottled it and he isn't fit to referee top games - period. I'm not saying that as it was my team that suffered, but he's damaged goods now, just as Clattenburg was when Gerrard whispered in his ear (albeit that was the RIGHT decision in that case). he deserves a spell in the wilderness, and given his age and girth that means he'll probably never comes back. Good, as his ****ing truculent, contrary manner means he never even gives us the steam off his **** when he officiates at Anfield as he's always trying to prove how 'tough' he is. Drops that act at Goodison and OT though, the fat ****.

That was about the worst call I can ever remember. I've said it for years about that tool Friend, he simply doesn't understand the game, he refs like he's never played in his life.

I agree about the video help as well, take Saturday for instance. A video ref would have taken 2 seconds to see that Friend was wrong & no longer than it took for Suarez to be treated to see that Dowd had made the wrong call. The game needs to wake up & stop making idiotic excuses as to why off field assistance won't work for football, as it does virtually every other team sport.

Now that comment I can totally agree with. I truly do not understand why players and FA oppose the use of any assistance that the Ref can get to make sure that a critical decision is right. How much time do we actually lose for a Ref to ask a 4th Official "Is there any reason why I cannot, award a goal, award a penalty, issue a red or yellow card?"

because half the time they get away with it, that's why sadly.

stamping, elbowing, reckless challenges. all teams have probably got away with them and on receiving end of ones.

With how long he took before making a decision and constantly holding his ear piece which gave the impression he was listening to someone, it seemed like he was getting video guidance. However, since he only gave a yellow, that clearly wasn't the case. He would have been talking to his "useful" assistants.

Also, I'm convinced that referees issues a yellow to be on the safe sides when they've not seen something put the player reaction clearly shows something has happened but at the same time, not wanting to overreact. I believe referees fear missing something more than getting something wrong. The Rooney and Miralles incidents are perfect examples. (although I have no idea how the ref missed Miralles' considering his position at the time)

You see you claim to have read the thread & you still post that drivel, as I didn't claim it was definitively the reason that Dowd made the call, I said it could have been a factor - which it patently could have been.

People arguing against this even being a possibility, was what I was arguing about, and I was getting all sorts of excuses, from people who patently hadn't seen the incident in detail & were being obtuse or argumentative because it was me that raised it.

Interestingly in the Ireland/All blacks rugby game yesterday there was even a debate about whether only a big screen showing all angle replays to the actual ref is enough is:

The ref in that game was asking for the video ref to look at something and he asked "you mean if the try is good" in that time the pitch ref had watched the replay on the big screen abd replied "no, I can see the try was good, what about the pass leading up to it"

This all happened inside two minutes.

Less arguements from players too if they all turn to see on a giant screen the studs go into the back of Suarez knee from 5 angles. And if the video can't confirm something? Well like in rugby it goes back to the ref on the pitch.

It's this nonsense that FIFA spout about keeping the game level.

I'm fairly sure that if some poor wee nation arrives at the world cup they're not going to get confused or complain about the fact a video ref might award them a goal...like it's some kind of witchcraft.

You would have thought so, studs are a fairly clear indication but then, does that open a can of worms for other incidents? Ripped shirt, a scratch or red mark?
