I was on Citalopran. Supposedly mild. I remember the lines from Pink Floyd's Brain Damage: "There's someone in my head, but it's not me". It had other side effects too. Suits some people, but I gave it six months and realised there was no magic panacea out there - YOU have to change. (Not you personally JIgs, I mean Tobes. :emoticon-0100-smile ).

I'm not nearly as shallow as you seem to think.

Goodness, JB, I had no idea about this! I'm so sorry! <yikes> I hadn't seen you for a while but I thought you were just taking a break.

I went through reactive depression last year and I went to counselling and mindful living, it helped me to deal with my issues. You will come out of the other end and don't you dare feel guilty or even embarrassed, it happens to everyone. Mental health is something everyone has and we can all succumb to its negative side.

    You take care! <hug> xxx

Thanks to all for all the input. I never wanted this to be a big thing, just wanted a blanket thanks to all who'd pm'd me. I'm really not ready to talk about it yet but thanks again to everyone for the suggestions and kind words.

I was prescribed a few different drugs and it was a bit trial and error, the first couple didn't work - as one made me virtually comatose and another just didn't agree with me. He finally hit the right one (can't remember it's name ffs) and within about 10 days I felt like a different person. The highs and lows were gone and it made me far more level in my mood. The best way I can describe it is that it was like being wrapped in cotton wool. Nothing got to me to either trigger euphoria or a black moment.

They helped me through the period and after about 4 months I weaned myself off them, as I'd come to terms with what had caused my issue and rationalised the entire episode.

So you're right they're not a magic potion that 'cures' the issue, but they're definitely a vital tool in helping you through the episode.

similar to my wife the anti depressants helped her cope during the the (very) bad times and get to an equilibrium where she could start to make the changes in her life so she could again function .The drugs continued for about 18 months until we were all convinced she wouldn't relapse and touchwood she hasn't. They are not a cure just an aid to enable a cure / partial cure to be found or at least to alleviate suicidal feelings.
