I'm just working my way through the Wire finally after years of saying I'll watch it. Didn't like Breaking Bad thought that was ****. Loved Deadwood and looking forward to the reboot/film whenever they decide which they're doing
The Wire is the best series I've seen Smokey (Sheffield lad in the lead too). Character development superb and the atmosphere is amazing. Such attention to detail. Breaking Bad a matter of taste
I'm on season 4 of The Wire and I'm struggling to get through it. I get why critics like it (it's almost like watching a documentary not a drama) and understand the reviews but I'm not gripped. I'll stick with it coz I want to see how it ends up but it's not in my top 10. I got 6 episodes from end of Breaking Bad and gave up. Great characters, great acting but thought most episodes were very similar and there was very view of them that had me gripped and wanting more. Would be a boring old planet we live on if we all liked the same stuff though.
Stay with The Wire mate - Season 4 was the one that I had to battle through but all the little side stories keep coming (including Snoop buying a nail gut at the local DIY store). The final season is epic
Cheers lads, seen Breaking bad up until the last series ( must get round to watching it) and enjoyed that. Actually got the box set of The Wire onboard the ship (be on its way home very soon) so might get round to watching that if it arrives home before I leave here. The others I will keep my eye open for.
I just started Boardwalk Empire this evening - looks highly promising. Must try and get to Atlantic City one day.
I've seen 2 and a half series of it and loved it. I'll get back to it to finish it one day. So much stuff to watch. Life was much simpler before kids!
Mick, can you PM me your address if you dont mind please fella. I have something I would like to send to you. PS; it isnt a signed photograph!
Apologies Mick. I missed your arrival on the forum. Haven't had time lately to keep up with the daily threads. Still, spotted you now and a very belated welcome
As you say, Oddy, what one watches is all a matter of personal taste, but why all the Yankee stuff? I cannot understand this as some of it is crap IMHO. There are certainly some British and Irish crime series I like, and Swedish, Danish, and French TV series too. Sub-titles don't bother me one bit, although I do understand why many cannot stand them. My main problem with American stuff is the the 'f' word appearing twice or three times in every sentence. Poor script writing I reckon, totally ****ing boring too............. Glorification of the Mafia isn't my idea of entertainment either, nothing funny about them.
Have you seen Gomorrah the tv series? Italian, subtitled and no glorification of the mafia. Talking about British tv series i can't recommend enough two comedy series. Green Wing and Lead Balloon.
Well wishes from me too Mick - I also missed the initial post Boardwalk Empire is excellent - have watched every series (it glorifies prohibition gangsters, how morally awful!) I have got The Sopranos boxset but not watched yet, I have watched the 2 first series of Vikings which STE D mentioned, which is very good but does glorify rape and pillage so that will never do. If you like the swords and sandals stuff I can thoroughly recommend a BBC series from about 8 years ago called simply Rome. I think they only did one or possibly two seasons but it was fascinating British made television that was a tad gory in places but beware - the liberal use of the F word, which I'm pretty sure the Roans would never actually have used! On a slight more sombre note, Tamerlo has been fighting off prostate cancer - he is clear now, but suffered some very bad side effects from the treatment. He still enjoys NH racing, but admits he rarely looks in here nowadays. Nevertheless, I'm sure we would all wish him well.
