Dick Van Dyke's "Cockney" accent in Mary Poppins has to be the worst ever accent attempt on TV or film. What other accent disasters can you think of?
I read an interview with a voice coach based in Edinburgh recently. He said that American actors are taught to do exaggerated versions of foreign accents because that is what American audiences want. This is especially true of Irish and Scots accents. Brad Pitt in The Devil's Own is a particularly bad case in point.
Sean Connery. Same ****in accent in every film. Wonderful portrayal of a kilted sweatie Oirish leprechaurn in The Untouchables. Wife beating tax dodging milkman from Edinbuggerer.
This guy always did it for me. 40 seconds into it he says he's from Aberdeen ER He's ****ing terrible. The clip seems to be from the TV show rather than the films.
Gabrielle Anwar in Burn notice. The bitch started off with ropey Irish and ended up, a season later American. Lol.
