with djokovic having beat tsonga, he's now guaranteed the world # 1 spot come monday, whatever happens between now and sunday. 1. how can it be a case of losing to the current # 1 in the final (if he does) but over taking him in the rankings the next day? he's been brilliant all year, but if he isn't # 1 coming into wimbledon how can he be #1 leaving it providing nadal betters his performance? 2. what does it say when someone who come sunday, could have won 5 of the last 6 grand slams be # 2 in the world? a load of balls if you ask me.
It's a bit like England being #4 in the Fifa rankings. But I suppose there does have to be some form of ranking system in place.
Yeah the tennis ranking system is ******ed, if you win a tournament then next year if you do not win it again then you lose ranking points or something and even if you do win it again then you do not get as many points as you did when you won it the first time. Nadal won three of the four GS last year so he is pretty ****ed this year even if he wins them all again. So even if Nadal wins Wimbledon which means he has won two of the three GS this year and as has been already said 5 of the last 6 GS he will go down in the rankings.
I thought that if you win a tournament you won the previous year you do not gain any points for it, and if you do not win a tournament you won the year before then you lose points. I am pretty sure this is correct.
This is correct. You do not gain any extra points, you win the same number of points. However in your previous post you said you would win less ranking points for winning the same tournament the next year, which is untrue. "if you do win it again then you do not get as many points as you did when you won it the first time" You obviously understand the ranking system better than most, but you made a small mistake, not to worry, it happens
Yes sorry it was just a bad turn of phrase because you would not really be winning any points just defending the ones you won for the tournament the previous year. So if Nadal wins Wimbledon this year he will of defended the 2000 points he won last year so his total ranking score will stay the same, if he loses in the final then he will lose 800 ranking points, and if he had missed the tournament he would of lost 2000 points from his total ranking score.
The rankings are based on a calender year being updated week to week. This year Novak has only lost 1 match to Federer in FO semi finals. Novak has beaten Rafa the last 4 times they have played including two straight sets defeats on the clay. Even if Rafa beats Novak in the Wimby final Novak has been the better player this year and deserves the No1 spot. There's more to being No1 in this sport than just turning up for slams you've also got to perfom in the other events.
it is simply a case of Nadal having a far bigger score to drop from last year. If Nadal is trully better you will see that reflected at the end of the year. when none of the 2010 tour is taken into account.
