I would drop Rooney and Welbeck (Welbeck running wont be needed as much against Uruguay compared to Italy)

I would also play the Liverpool formation and make Henderson play further up the field. He would be just behind Sterling and just in front of Gerrard ideally.

    ----------------------Hart

    Johnson-----Cahill----Jagielka-----Baines

    ------------------Gerrard

    --------Henderson-----Sterling

    Lallana--------Sturridge---------TheOx

    ------------Hart-------------
    Johnson-Cahill-Jagielka-Baines
    ----------Gerrard------------
    ----Henderson--Barkley------
    ----------Sterling-----------
    ----Rooney--Sturridge-------

Very much relies on Johnson and Baines for width.

Johnson was pretty gash and Rooney, aside from his 'world class' cross, wasn't involved at all. Drop them both. I thought Welbeck had a really good game, as he usually does for England, and would play him again.

    Sturridge
    Welbeck Sterling Chamberlain
    Gerrard Henderson

Not sure what people think Johnson had a poor game. Wasn't 10/10 star man but certainly wasn't the worst player.

You'd drop Gerrard and Welbeck but keep Rooney on the pitch?

Not being the worst player doesn't mean he wasn't bad. Lost the ball in the final third far too often as he has done all season, did his usual shot blazing from 30 yards and didn't once go around the outside to knock a cross in.

Him and Welbeck linked up well and both defended well. No surprise Italy instead attacked down are left as were getting more there than the right.

He kept the ball well, had a couple if shots yes and was no point crossing as we had Sturridge and then Rooney as the only players in the box, even in the last 15 minutes. He as never going to win headers against the Italian back 4.

    Yes.

What did Gerrard do to warrant staying in the team if Rooney should be dropped?

Which seems to be the common concensus.

  9. The Liverpool formation would be two up top with a midfield diamond; aka like Magic suggested

Like it. Said about a 532 on our board and this is sort of my thinking. Might put gerrard where wilshere is or jones but basically what i would do.

Though said last night i would play rooney from tge bench against the guays. If we play with one striker and hes going to be wasted out left then no point starting him.

Anyway rooney haters, who in the england squad would have any impact playing well out of position? I mean rooney was a left winger last night first half? Your best striker played left wing? Logic has left the building.

So go on, slam rooney but who else has an impact playing miles out of position?

He got schooled big time but it wasnt his fault. It was sterlings fault. Great going forward but no help dropping back and helping henderson and gerrard.

Dont think Roy will change the formation, he stuck to that formation for all 3 friendlies prior to Italy game as well

Nothing, but Gerrard will never be dropped because he's the England captain and Roy has no balls. I said before a ball was kicked that I wouldn't start Rooney, Gerrard or Johnson. I still wouldn't.

    Daft.

I would play all 3 and play to their strenghts.

    That usually works in football.

I can get rooney, sterling and sturridge in their best positions, gerrard controlling from deep and release johnson from the shackles of defending. Its not ****ing hard and similar formations have been listed here already.

We can all see it. Its blatantly obvious. Roy cant though.

Glass Jack as a DM? He'd be broken in 5mins and then you've wasted a sub.

    Plus he can't defend

    Would he?

There's no guarantee of that at all. The whole side needs refreshing, from my original selection I'd put Lallana in ahead of Rooney, play Barkley behind Sturridge in a 4 2 3 1.

We really ought to sweep out some of the old guard.

    There you go. Winning team:

    --------------Hart--------------
    -Johnson--Cahill--Jagielka--Shaw
    --Sterling---Gerrard----Barkley----
    ---Lallana---Sturridge---Oxlade---

Let Rooney come as a sub. Wilshere should never have gotten on the plane.
