With no Kompany and with us out of form we need to turn this into a scrap. Hope Cambiasso can nullify Yaya Toure to a certain extent like he did with Rooney. Get Albrighton and Schlupp putting in high balls to Wood and Ulloa and fight for everything. If we try and beat City at who can play the best football we will lose. Last 20 get the pace of Vardy on to give them different problems. It's time we forget about what we did to Man U and get back to winning.
Vardy has had 1 good game all season Nugent has had 2 or 3 ok games Wood came on against Villa and actually used his size properly for the first time. I actually think Wood is the best finisher at the club apart from King and possibly Leo. He deserves a chance now because the others aren't scoring
and Wood has had 0. He's ****. One tap in against Everton is all he has. When you're down in the dumps you don't want a good finisher. You need to work for your chances because you don't get any otherwise. Wood is a liability as proven against Villa. He's slow, has a poor touch, can't header, is weak and can't pass. He also snatched at a half chance when other, more experinced strikers might have made more of it.
Apart from Ulloa and the Man U game Vardy and Nugent have been poor Wood has been thrown on for a few minutes here and there so to judge him is massively unfair. When things aren't working and players aren't performing you change things and five others a chance.
Wood's stock always rises when he's not playing then we play him and we remember that he's shocking. What's he got, something like 5 goals for us in nearly two years now? That January when we played sides like Huddersfield and Barnsley he looked good, but we were playing sides like Huddersfield and Barnsley. Vardy is the only striker we have that is capable of pressing a side for 90 minutes. When you do that at this level you force mistakes and hasty clearances. He's probably undroppable solely because of that trait. Ulloa is the goal threat. Give him half a chance and it's going in. He's probably had about 7 shots all season and scored all 7. He's had diabolical service yet has a goal return level with Wilfried Bony, Graziano Pelle and Diafra Sakho who have had excellent seasons. He's undroppable. Nugent is a work horse, capable of doing Vardy's job at a lower level but he's one of our best passers. He gets the ball down and creates things. I imagine his career will be something similar to Paul Scholes in that he'll drop back and become a central midfielder rather than someone who plays right behind the centre forwards. He's not been playing well but his cameo against Villa tells you that he's not THAT bad. Yes his finishing is generally awful and he's dropped a notch of pace but he's the ideal man to bring off the bench as far as we're concerned. Wood is none of those things. Ideal to come on in the Championship when we're chasing a lead because we were usually on the front foot and creating chances left and right. Not in this division. When you're in the position we are you need to scrap and he's too much of a liability. He's like a taller, less technical Paul Gallagher.
I'm sorry Nugent one of our best passers? Unless you mean letting the game pass him by that's laughable. He is good in the championship where the game is much slower in the final 3rd but at this level he wants too long on the ball and loses possession. Wood deserves his chance because Vardy and Nugent so far just aren't doing the business.
You are joking. We don't have many better passes and you know that. Whether it says a lot about us or not is irrelevant.
Funny how fans can come to such vastly different opinions. Think AKCJ you are being a bit harsh on Wood to be fair. Harsh to judge a player this season when he has been given bits and pieces of play. That said, I do agree that Vardy is the one forward with the engine and pace that can play the pressing game we need. Ulloa and Wood up front would just be too static Options are limited until January. On a midfield note.... I would like to see Drinkwater given another go to see if he can get a bit of last seasons form back.
NP tried to bring in Deeney and we were all slating him saying how we didnt need him. Oh how he would be useful now - a striking 3 of ulloa, vardy and deeney (to be clear, that includes one of a sub to bring on) would vastly improve us...
Ouch, very harsh. I agree with the sentiment that he has yet to show the quality needed but wouldn't quite go that far. How many tap in has Nugent had? Pearson clearly doesn't rate him well enough as he has only been a bit part player so to expect him to start now is unlikely to happen when Vardy and Ulloa are still fit and performing reasonably well.
Apologies if it wasn't you, Ed, but someone has been banging on about Wood. Maybe it was Edwood Woodwood!
To be fair to Wood, the way he cushioned that header that the Watford keeper whacked at him last season was pretty impressive. Reactions like that aren't bestowed on every striker.
Bottom line IMO David Nugent has never been a premier league striker and never will be. Theres question marks over Jamie Vardy and Leonardo Ulloa is clearly Prem class IMO Chris Wood has all the potential to be a good premier league striker and he deserves a proper chance. Last season he could have no complaints due to the goals and form of David Nugent and Jamie Vardy. But this season he has scored as many goals as Nugent and Vardy despite hardly playing and not getting a chance We losing every week so its time to shake the team up and the misfiring strikers with 2 goals between them all season are one of the major reason were not winning games. Yes were conceding a lot of cheap goals but we not scoring goals either Remember what everyone thought of Connor Wickham this time last year and he scored the goals to keep Sunderland up. So don't write Chris Wood off
Putting Wood in against Man City is a terrible idea, hes not going to put a shift in like Vardy or Nuge would and we have Ulloa to do the big man stuff, to be honest saying that though, im pretty sure ive never seen Wood win a header. We'd literally be throwing Wood on the fire if hes expected to do something against Man City ...
