I wonder if there's a pattern suggesting that managers who were previously strikers in the game overcompensate for their lack of knowledge and experience in defending and overdo the defence, concentrating on it too much or shaping the team up so that its over defensive. Strikers generally don't make good managers, do they? Any examples?
Arguably the best managers weren't good players. Mourinho, SAF, Wenger spring to mind. Although Clough would go against that theory.
