But that's very close to what I've been saying but I had to explain myself till the cows come home. What Parker said I what I was saying only I got there keeping the same shape as he won't change it.

    Johnson-----Alvarez------Giaccherini

How very strange. Should you not be saying, Fletcher should be in there for Alvarez. If you've changed your mind fair do's, everyone's entitled.<ok>

Parker, The line of creativity is exactly what need fella imo. Knowing he won't change the shape as it's built around Cat's position, I'd slot Alvarez next to the other CM and let him venture forward, roaming into the AM position, we need more creativity up the strikers arse and those three you put are boys to provide it I reckon.

Cattermole Rodwell Bricutt and Larsson can fight it out for the two spots behind and Fletcher and Wickham compete to be the man up top.
Yeh about that I agree and they will all most likely be used at some point
It's very much a squad game

Bri 4-2-3-1 and two DM's are what you have been set against, thinking because Gus wont play, it it is not your prefered way, thats my reading of it, and I have also said that I am not rigid in the Personel up front it is just that for me Fletch behind Whicks would be my choice, if its Giacca / Whicks or Alvarez / Fletch fine no problem. I am OK with any DM pairing also any two from the four mentioned would be fine, its just we need more action in front of goal and I personally think we would get it with a 4-2-3-1 set up, its certainly worth a try. Am I reading you wrong mate, it wouldnt be out of character <ok>

Parker wasn't talking about the dm area, he was talking about the players around the forward. He put Alvarez where you said Fletch. That's the bit that confussed about.

Back to the 2 dm's thing. I'm not 'set against' it, I just prefer to keep things realistic. Our whole club on every level is now built around the system of one DM who holds the position to form a back 3 when the unit pushes up. All preseaon went into it, the u21's play it, the u18s play it, everything about the football at this club is built around a single DM, it can't work with 2 dm's which is why it's just pipe dream. I just feel harping on about a formation that ain't going to happen is just a waste of time that's all. So knowing this I'd rather muse over possible line ups. Regards. We could discuss 442 or 352, it ain't going to happen on the pitch so whats the point?

I just happen to think that 4-2-3-1 would suit the players I see struggling too close to the relegation places for comfit, trying to adopt to tactics that are so far not quite working, and it would seem that quite a few on here agree, cheers mate. <ok>

I agree too fella, I'd love a bit of versatility, but weather we like it or not we play to one system now. Proved by him playing players out of position to keep the system.

Although I find this well balanced what strikes me is not one of these midfielders have consistently played 90 mins (let alone together) You are therefore talking about managing this in one part of the game....From the start? after a period of consolidation? start of second half ? last third/20mins of the game chasing something?
If you can see AJ doing this for 90mins it puts defensive "Delaying" demands on him in midfield for example . If you think of him doing this week in week out you`re probably not going to get the best out of him. I think he really sees himself as a wide man "essentially" He might be able to drop into this role for a period... as he does from time to time...then the others need to be considered in the same ways according to their strengths...And tho he looks red hot at times you can hardly say Alvarez has been tested

On a lighter note...drop one of these back with Catts and who ever else youve chosen and youd have.....the perfect.....Christmas tree 4 3 2 1....Ibet if you based it on something like that youd probably win!...what a game...

It is mate. I much rather him change the system to fit the players he wants to play in properly rather than him trying to squeeze these players into the wrong positions. Connor on the left is the best example. But when Cats came on against Liverpool, rather then changing the system and putting him next to Bridcutt as two DMs, he kept Bridcutt as the single DM and had Catts playing CM and he looked lost. If he wanted to keep the system then it should have been Larrson for Rodwell not Catts.

Very frustrating but he won't budge

Well I certainly wouldn't chuck them all in together as soon as they're available fella. Giacc more then anyone needs bleeding in again gradually imo. I'd be looking to start Alvarez for West Ham, the lad needs minute and we need chances creating. I'd be looking to give him 60 minutes.

Well whatever line-up we put out over the next four games, they are going to be well and truly tested, the teams we are about to face are typically running into their best form of the season and what looked like respite a few weeks ago is certainly not now. We have come thro, a hellish week and the run up to Xmas means we are going to have to make some changes, so it is not going to be boring thats for sure. I have been impressed with the input to this thread and I think some great suggestions have been put forward, from real football supporters, whatever happens we will always be forever Sunderland and who knows we might run into our best form of the season and surprise a few on the way. <cheers>
