He looked like a man on his way out, down and dejected, walking to and from the tunnel. I saw two sides of Gillingham, one motivated with confidence, the other heartless and downbeat. We do create chances when we play well, but we don't finish them!
I think saturdays home match v Orient will decide if Taylor gets the sack. Any thing less than a Gills win will see Taylor leaving.
The sad part about all this is surely he only needs to change the tactics. He has the players and not many supporters are having a go at the team...it seems to be aimed more at PT. I said a long while back, even when he talks positively i feel negative vibes from him. Sadly psychologically for me that affects the camp subconsciously throughout. It's always been my main gripe with him the tactics and his motivational ability. It's just soooo boring to watch his setup play.
Hullgills agreed shame though. We are going nowhere but down if things dont change very soon. PT will not keep us up.
I have always liked Peter Taylor but alas his tactics are far too negative for me to continue to support him despite the poor results. The best I have seen us play this season was with a 4-4-2 with Dack and Mcglashen on the flanks. The 5-3-2 does not suit us especially with no pace or creative attacking players in the team. I can`t see anything changing result wise unless he is far more positive in his team selections and how the players are told to approach the game. Last chance saloon for Peter.
I don't get a chance to go to that many games but I feel PT has made one post match interview in the last month or so & it has just been repeated after every game 'the team played well today and if they continue to play like that the results will change.' That's fine after 1-2 games but this many in even he should realise something has to changed and he can't just expect 'luck' to do us a favour!!! I'm not saying PT has used the word luck but if he doesn't change tactics and we keep losing how else does he think we will win.
He got us into the Championship....but that is ancient history now. He has ok players at his disposal now whereas he had 'outstanding' players last time. Times have changed and over the last two years Gills have gone backwards whilst a lot of other teams have progressed. Yes it may be their turn in the spotlight and we've had ours.......but it is no reason to accept mediocrity as success. Although mediocrity would at least be a step in the right direction and seen as a positive achievement. Feeling down at the moment............."The future's bright......." but the future's not blue........
Hmmm.............. I think it was basically the side that Pulis put together ! And today I had the misfortune to read Taylor's reaction to the Cup defeat - talking about the players working as hard as they could and giving their all. I know that the players can give a hell of a lot more. They HAVE done so a couple of times this season ( Peterborough and Preston. ) If you can't get more out of the players on a MORE FREQUENT basis ( 3 goals in the last 8 games -- with NO wins ) - then go NOW -we can't do any worse without a manager.
Whenever I hear Peter Taylor after a match I am reminded of both Hess (in our last championship season) and Ronnie Jemson, both would tell us each week that the players attitude and commitment should be praised, but neither could motivate or set the team up to win enough matches, in Hess's case we left the change too late (to his credit Hess resigned, albeit a month or two too late) but the improvement in form when Stan Ternant took over may have saved us if he had been given just a few more matches. It is for that reason that we have to make the change now and appoint a similar type of manager, someone with no previous association with the club and the requisite experience needed to turn our season around.
'Always'.......maybe it was 'basically' Pulis's side. He still had to motivate a side that had suffered a heartbreaking defeat at Wembley and steer them through another 44+ games to another play off final. Not an easy task as can be seen by the number play off final 'losers' who then plummet the next season. No, I'm not defending Taylor ........but let's not get too carried away. We ACTUALLY could do worse...................
I agree Windy he did take the Pulis team and make it even better (even without Asaba and Taylor for most of the season), but that was 14 years ago and the world of football has moved on and the Taylor of 1999 got us playing flowing possession football that was as good as anything I have seen at Priestfield on a regular basis, unfortunately this PT has inherited a much poorer side and seems devoid of ideas and the motivation required to get them playing a winning style of football. It easy to say that none of these players would have got in his first side (Nelson maybe), but it even more damning to say that other than Nelson and Egan none of them would actually get into Stimsons side either.
Ashford.....agreed. When you look at the fees paid for players barely attaining mediocrity it is really worrying. Super Bob cost £600,000. A fortune in those days.....but I'd need reminding what the gate fees were then. The attendances were better and the money was coming in too. What would £600,000 buy now and how much would Super Bob fetch? My point is that the gap has widened to such a degree that to buy a decent player of that standard would be beyond the reaches of most average league one clubs. There are a few clubs with a decent amount of money washing around in league one....but Gillingham is not one of them. It would be interesting to realise what our league position would be based on perceived wealth and value.........I would not be surprised if we were not in the bottom four there too?
The season Taylor got us promoted I remember he said it was Dario Gradi who told him you could get out of this division playing football perhaps he should ring Dario again for some more advice.
Perhaps PT has forgotten how to play decent football as the grey cells have dropped off with advancing years.......shame.
WINDYROG I can accept your comments in Post No.51.....however I too used to be an optimist. I am in my 6th decade of watching The Gills and perhaps I have a more realistic expectation of our fortunes ( no - it's not all cynicism ). I do not believe that, given our income stream and likely investment into the Club, we can do a lot in terms of ascending to great heights in the football pyramid. I believe that we DO have players capable of performing far better than shown in the last 8 league games. I have used the example of the teams' performances against Peterborough & Preston to illustrate this very point.....So -- Why can't the team perform as well on a more regular basis ? -- against 'weaker' teams ! Why can't Taylor show more motivational passion of which I have recently commented - instead of keep on telling the Media that he is happy that the players have done well and given their 'all'. In my time of watching The Gills, I have seen little 'success' - but, given our 'status' and position in the aforementioned football pyramid, I am not expecting any substantial success before my 90 minutes are up ! I have NEVER complained if we have lost to a better team - even when we got 'stuffed 0-5' at Chelsea - because the team had given their all and TRIED. I believe that Taylor's tactics do not ALLOW the players to think other than in negative terms - and despite my confidence in the individual ability of each of the players, they are following orders when all 11 defend corners, and when we retreat to our penalty area when teams attack us, and when we have the ball we play sideways and backwards so many times instead of employing some forward thinking - and all the time Taylor just stands at the dugout like a stuffed dummy. edit -- I'm quite happy to provide Taylor with a 'taxi' ride away from Crawley ( and Gillingham ) tonight.
Just what has happened to the man who used to make us play good football (albeit a life time ago now)....that is the frustration I am suffering?
