    As opposed to America where it's the richest candidate that wins. That's hardly democratic either.

    True, but wouldn't it be nice if we could have neither of those options? Maybe I'm being too optimistic.

    How about an elected consul, replaced every year; giving way, after civil war, to an Emperor?
    Or a National Assembly overthowing the monarchy, instituting a reign of terror, and giving way to an Emperor?
    Or a General Secretary or President backed by a politburo?
    Or a military dictatorship?
    Or an insane theocracy?
    We could copy the Athenians and go for direct democracy- not sure the EU would favour that! Don't mention the "R" word.

    A contitutional monarchy fronting an imperfect democracy, doesn't seem so bad. Needs a bit of tinkering. (I'm not a Royalist, by the way).
