Redvers does most of his buying for Sheikh Al Thani (Qatar Racing) these days.

This week's prices are an anomaly. The true state of the British sales market will be seen next week when the international buyers have gone home.

In addition to being a 3/4 brother to AUTHORIZED, the yearling is out of a half-sister to Brooklyn's Dance, the dam of last weekend's Arc winner SOLEMIA.

Report from Racing Post on the sale topper:

Lot 557 - the Galileo colt out of Funsie, already named Hydrogen, becomes the most expensive yearling sold worldwide this year when knocked down to David Redvers for 2.5 million guineas on behalf of Sheikh Fahad al Thani.

Not only is he a half-brother to the champion Authorized but he is also related to Sunday's Arc heroine Solemia and Prix Marcel Boussac winner Silasol.

The bay, who strongly resembled his sire, was consigned on behalf of breeder Paul Makin by Bill Dwan of the Castlebridge Consignment, who described him earlier this week as "a beautifully balanced colt with a great attitude".

Auctioneer Philip Myerscough also waxed lyrical as the colt was led in by Michael Martin, saying: "Here's a horse of a different type altogether. He is just a star."

Bidding opened at 400,000gns and rested between Jeremy Noseda and William Haggis until 800,000gns.

Noseda stayed in until 1.1 million guineas, at which point he had a new rival in Nicolas de Watrigant of Mandore International, who had come in at a million. They both cried enough, however, when Magnier made a bid of 1.3 million guineas.

Redvers, standing on the left hand stairs and taking instructions from Sheikh Fahad down below, made his move at 1.4 million guineas. From then on, it became a duel between the agent and Magnier, with the latter initially shaking his head in defeat at 2.3 million guineas before giving it one more, ultimately unsuccessful, try.

"We came here to buy the best and we came away with the best," said Sheikh Fahad. "He's a stallion in the making. We expected he would be the top lot and he is worth it [2.5 million].

"We'll decide at a later date who will train him, as we do with all our yearlings."

Redvers added: "It's a tired old cliche but he's the whole package, which was shown in the fact that he was sought after by all the best judges.

"Sheikh Fahad is the most enthusiastic, measured client in the business. I believe that over the next five years, we will go to some extraordinary places."

Bred by Paul Makin's Paulyn Ltd, the colt is the seventh foal out of Funsie, an unraced Saumarez half-sister to Prix Cleopatre heroine Brooklyn's Dance, the dam of Solemia among others. He descends from Green Valley, the dam of Green Dancer.

That seems like an awful lot of money Princess, can i ask if this horse either does not race due to injury or races but never wins a race would it still have a place at stud because of it's breeding. I guess the question is how important when dealing with Stud value is racecourse form. It was prompted by noticing that this horse was produced by an unraced mare, and what prompted someone to pay to send an unraced mare to Galileo.

He'd have a place somewhere as a half-brother to a Derby winner, but they certainly would not be able to ask much more than a few thousand pounds for his fee. His race record will be paramount in securing his future as a stallion prospect.

The mare may be unraced, but having already produced a Derby winner, her progeny record carries more importance - hence sending her to Galileo. AUTHORIZED was her first foal, he would have been conceived at a fee of €30,000 in 2003. Again, although she was unraced, she is from a good family, hence the justification of sending her to him.
