Not Prem but........................ ===================== Russian Club Offered Barton £100,000-a-week « Thread Started Today at 12:07am » "...Joey Barton was offered a £100,000-a-week deal by Zenit, a figure made more attractive by the 13 per cent tax rate applied to footballers in Russia, before instead leaving Newcastle for Queens Park Rangers." He was the difference last season between automatic promotion and a play-off place (and not even too sure we would have been in the top 6 without him). I also think that he has the ability to be more than an average player in the Premiership but he has to prove that and then gladly we should pony up.
A tad unfair, Adel wasn't just a big part in us getting promoted I reckon he was the main reason. Solid back 4 and great keeper too but nearly every attack either featured an assist or goal from Tarbs. So now he wants the same dough as SWP and Barton? Not proven he is worth it in the 3 games so far but maybe he could be on an increased rate for goals or assists instead of raising his basic salary. He could still set fire to the Premiership but I've got 10p with William Hill that he will be offski in January. I reckon the style of play Warnock wants with his new boys will see Adel reduced to Plan B rather than the old Plan A which was give the ball to him and see what happens! How long before we are moaning about the "winger knocks it in for the big man" style of play?
Spot on Northy. It's a non-story as far as I can see. He's under a contract which he signed, end of. If he expects to go in and re-negotiate an existing contract then he can forget about it. If he wants to extend his contract then that's a different matter.
The question is, would you gamble 30k per week now on Adel making the step up sooner rather than later? Leave it a few games and he starts to really shine then he'll fill his head with ideas of Real Madrid and look for a January exit (which he might do anyway) Offer him a new contract and he fades like he did at Spurs then we're lumbered long term with a flawed genius that we can't do anything with. It sounds a bit harsh or clinical but I'm just asking opinions. Personally, I would try to sign him to an extended, more lucrative contract now to keep him happy and hope the club prospers enough for him to buy into the "vision". I feel he can make it with guidance but am also aware that probably the most skillful footballer I've seen was Denilson (Betis one not Arsenal) but he's NEVER been worth the money paid for him (still fantastic on his day though and a favourite of mine). We'd still be paying for potential at this stage...
Give him a little bit more ££ and a contract extension, then if he does it for us this season give him a bumper contract and for longer. No brainer really. Players like SWP and Barton are top premier League performers and deserve their wage.... Adel is yet to prove this and until he does shouldn't be on the same money (imo)
I's funny how one player can split opinions on this board. Harry Redknapp is a good manager, but he couldn't fit Adel into his team or maybe Adel couldn't adjust to what Harry wanted. Here we have a manager that has given him a platform on which to perform - I hope he does get an improved contract (extended as well) PURELY based upon performances between now and Jan. If after that a silly money offer comes in, then I would expect the club to look at the offer and make the necessary judgement that is better for all parties concerned.
