I can't believe no one has mentioned the twin elephants in the room, China and Russia, they don't want anyone "Interfering" in Syria but then they have never been too keen on human rights or anyone telling them it's not ok to shoot people in the streets for protesting.

They are the problem here, not the UK and the US (and everyone else in the world).

So i'm afraid this one can't be laid at anyone's door but China and Russia, same as North Korea. Anyone see any similarities between NK and Syria? Brutal repression of it's citizens by any means necessary and a laughable system of "Democracy", just like Russia and China.

Is it just China and Russia?
I think it was Michael Portillo on the 'This Week' who mentioned that India and South Africa were also part of the veto.

It is a total disgrace IMO.

Edit: India and South Africa don't have the power of the Veto. Only the five permanent members of the security council do: France, UK, USA, Russia and China.

The Arab League said it would continue to try to implement its plan despite the veto. The veto "does not negate that there is clear international support for the resolutions of the Arab League," its Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby said.

He could have added "apart from China and Russia that is"

This is interesting (to me)- the UK, for what it's worth, has membership of the "big 5", can see that disappearing come the Scottish referendum result: Japan, Germany, Brazil and India would get in before England for starters.

    Does it really matter?

The UK has one of the worst standards of living in western Europe. The Germans have had their balls cut off for 60 years and have one of the highest standards of living.

The only countries above Germany are the even 'pussier' ones such as Switzerland and Norway.

Wales and NI aren't going anywhere so it'll still be the "UK". <whistle>

Wales is a principality and NI is a mess.

We get to sit at the business end of the top table. In my own naive way I guess that that matters.

Regarding Wales: I heard the other day on the radio that only 6% want independence rising to 12% if Scotland votes for it. Swansea in the Premier League, Cardiff might go up this year, not going to throw that away are they? Where were those teams ten years ago? It's a conspiracy so it is.

But you do struggle to list any tangible benefits that this delivers apart from a psychological cock extension.

Exactly but then I'm no expert on what goes on behind closed doors, I can only guess that it's beneficial. Can't be a negative, I'm fairly certain of that.

As the yanks used to say about their pet dictators in central america "He might be a SOB but hes our SOB".As for what happens when the west goes to war look at iraq, afghanistan, libya etc.I think the last place china invaded was Tibet and russia georgia both one could argue to protect their border.Correct me if Im wrong but london doesnt have a border with baghdad nor washington with kandahar.Save us the terrorism argument which could only apply at a stretch to afghanistan where humanitarian/liberal intervention hasnt stopped corruption, poppy growing, trampeling of womens rights and the selling of children to rich afghans. All in all a very murky political scene and one thats difficult to take sides on if you havent got a firm ideological belief behind you.:police:
