Studied English way back in the mists of time, and had to do A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man - bored the tits off me. Liked Beckett - More Pricks than Kicks - and Sean O'Faolain. But having a short attention span, Frank O'connor's short stories and especially JP Donleavy were more my thing. He was a mad hard-drinking American Irish b@astard and an entire Dublin generation waited to see if he and Brendan Behan would fight it out to see who was the main man. Modern day, you can't beat Joseph O'Connor and lately Kevin Barry - City of Bohane is a modern Irish masterpiece, pure atmospheric poetry. It's a Paddy/Mick thing, poetry, literature, music, embedded in the psyche. Great to be Irish bud.
