The Liverpool game counts for a valuable 3 points. This game can help open a gap. If we draw or lose well the gap depends on the results of the bottom 3 who all have tricky games so it could be that a point moves us further away. But what the heck we. are going to win aren't we <cheers>

We can lose to Southampton tomorrow and still finish in 17th position at the end of the season.

It is not a question of affording to lose matches, it is a matter of accumulating enough points to survive. A team at the bottom of the table is unlikely to suddenly pull out a string of wins.

One thing we haven't been doing this season is drawing enough games, just like a cricketer uses singles to build a century. A draw tomorrow against a very good Southampton side will not be a disaster. A defeat will be disappointing, but again, not a disaster.

I think we can beat Southampton tomorrow, but, I'd still be very happy with a point.

What absolute Bolox....We have lost far to many home games already and if you think thats ok then you dont know what your talking about as our survival depends on it..... If we lose another home game it cancelled out the Liverpool win and puts us back to where we started and odds on for relegation.....We already have to rely on other teams results as it is so unless we win then its out of our hands. We cannot afford to go back in the bottom 3 we must win to stay ahead......There are harder games coming up without losing to one of our rivals at home.....

Utter bollox - as you put it.

We are out of the bottom 3 now so we no longer need to rely on other teams.
As PGF said, all we need to do now is accumulate enough points.

If we get -3 points for losing to Southampton I can see your point. But we would get zero and still be 3 points better off than before the Liverpool game, so we're not back to where we started.

I don't see Southampton as one of our "rivals" either - they're a solid upper mid-table team that we will have to play very well against to get something from the game. Here's hoping. <ok>

We have lost too many home games though and that trend needs to be reversed for survival.

    We beat Palace

    We beat Liverpool

and now we need to beat Southampton.

    It's Very Simple.

For the rest of this season we are no longer in the Premier League. For the rest of this season we are in a Premier League Qualification Pool consisting of 7 teams. Only the top 4 qualify for the premier league next season and currently we hold the final qualification spot in 4th place.

    1. Watford-------------------------24
    2. Leicester-----------------------21
    3. Middlesborough---------------20
    4. SWANSEA---------------------18
    5. Palace--------------------------16
    6. Hull------------------------------16
    7. Sunderland--------------------15

The names of the teams in the pool may change but the only thing that matters is our position in the pool.

Things could get a bit surreal in the pool where a loss may not be the end of the world. If all the teams around us also lose then we maintain our position, as we are currently 4th, then win or lose, maintaining our position means it's been a good week. Losing isn't the thing but how it effects our position is because our position is everything.

The only thing that exists for us to the end of the season is the pool and the 6 other teams in it and the only thing that matters to us is our position.

Didn't realise we've only beaten Southampton once in the last 9 league meetings - eek!

Law of Average will be on our side , although it never helped that much again the Saints to this point . BUT , coming off 3 points away from a title contender under our new " non American " manager has got me very , very confident . Win this one to make it 3 wins out of last 4 and anything will be possible with the confidence brought to the table by Clement

We aren't the same side we have been the past 18months.

We are now back to our best/or at least close to it.

Under Clement we now know that if we play well, especially at home, we can win.

Van Dijk is also injured tonight. Huge blow for them and huge plus for us.

Valley, don't get ahead of yourself here. I will start agreeing with you when we start winning regularly, I still have no idea how this is going to go tonight in terms of performance and result, for me it could still go either way, we have already had a couple of false dawns. I hope you are right but that's a bold statement after 2 games, one we had a great result and one we lost to bottom of the league. Lets wait and see after a few more games.

Its a rout one night tonight.

Just went outside, went to walk to the garage but turned around. Was outside for less than a minute, nose is streaming, freezing cold and I'm wet through from the ice rain.

Not good weather for our style of play at all. Wind is picking up too.
