I did the Math, and it turns out they are not only short of the odd "s", but rather a lot of "U"s as well.

 

I think the opposite. HE would suit Mourinho's style of play. Mourinho likes his Makelele, Matic type players.

 

Don't want to spoil a lifetime, but you do know that Robin is a fictitious character? Which means anyone could look like him. Even Forster!

Everyone has too many U's. It is a pointless vowel in many situations.

At least we got rid of a lot of the silent U after O's, tho. Not all of them ,but a lot. So we are closer to the right amount.

 

You can't just expect to spell words the way they are spoken phonetically.

Actually, I really quite like the whole English TH > F thing. I think it is one of the more endearing aspects of our dialect.

That, and the 'orwight mate' greeting we use. I don't get to speak with many English folk where I am, so hearing both the above tends to bring a smile to my weathered expatriate face.

 

I lived near Bath for many years, which was of course pronounced Baaf by us yokels

 

You've told us before but, nope, I can't remember. Where are you located, Black? Spain or Portugal or somewhere else warmer than here?

 

Much further away I'm afraid. South Korea at the moment. Spent a couple years in China. Really hoping I can move to Philippines or Vietnam before the end of the year.

Yeah this is my ninth year in asia. But thats it. I havent set foot in Africa or the Americas, so still a long way to go.

As someone who has worked in Bath for nearly 40 years I long ago realised there are actually at least 4 different ways of pronouncing the name of that fair city. As you say RJ, local folk, especially Twertonians, say "Baaafff", so that the terraces at the Recreation Ground used to sound like a field of sheep as the home supporters urged their team on. More upper class inhabitants would, of course, use the long "a" as in "Bauth", whereas visitors from the North of England use a short, clipped "a" with a long drawn-out "th", resulting in something like "Baththth". Then there are the American and Japanese visitors in their hordes...
