Well considering there is a CCTV tape of the incident (which has yet to have been released), you would think that that would definitively show what had happened and who was at fault (unless it's inconclusive I guess). If the tape does clearly show what happened, it should show that either Sutil or Lux has been telling porkies.
I read something which could explain the incident. http://www.crash.net/f1/news/169286/1/could_legal_threat_cost_sutil_f1_place.html Can't say anything about reliability of source, but it's a possible explanation.
Well my take would be that Sutil cheekily chucks the glass in his direction, accidently catches him, and he's claiming assault? Seems more likely than Sutil getting angry over it, storming over to Lux and sticking a glass in his neck.
If that's what happened as reported in Crash then Sutils been a bit of an idiot to say the least, be interesting to see the repercussions from this. I'm not a fan of Sutil anyway so if Hulkenburg gets another chance out of this then that's fine with me.
I get the feeling this one is going to run and run. You don't get that many stitches for nothing, even with glass. It may have been the drink but what ever Sutil did he made a substantial contact with Lux.
$10 million is exactly the figure I would expect any initial claim to stand at but I agree with BLS that this is likely to run for a long time…
Autosport reports that Force India will not drop Sutil because of this... for the Spanish GP, at least. The quote from Force India sounds less than "fully committed" to me: "Although the team continues to monitor the situation, it remains fully committed to its driver line-up at this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix." Is it time to merge the Future of Nico Hulkenberg thread with this one yet?
The quote says they are committed for the spanish grand prix - does that mean Sutil could face the boot before Monaco then?
I'll give him up until spa if he is found guilty, up until next year when Hulk replaces him if found not guilty.
Might this affair do more damage to Renault than Sutil? While Camp Sutil continue to proclaim his innocence and say they would be happy to see the CCTV video from M1NT as it would show that the injury to Lux was accidental, it is reported that Lux had already decided what he wanted in compensation: "Sutil to publicly apologise, make a gift to a charitable organisation and voluntarily sit out a few grands prix." It seems to be unreasonably manipulative of Lux to seek to affect Force India's race plans.
Have FI actually said that about the CCTV footage? If so then I would agree that it makes Lux look pretty bad.
I'm quite shocked by this: is there any confirmation that those are Lux's terms for a settlement of the case? He's a successful, intelligent businessman, surely he would know that that would make him look bad. Of course, a cynic would say that with Sutil out of the car, Force India's results may improve! But not me, no, I'd never say that.
Well I did say merely "affect Force India's race plans." The German press are reporting this. Sutil's camp are denying they knew anything about it so I presume the story has come from Lux's side. Sutil's story is that he only intended to throw champagne into Lux's face.
Ok, so if he's guilty, then yes, a public apology and a charitable donation are fair enough, its not like Lux needs the cash. But effecting Force India's race plans? Thats out of order in my book. In case Lux has forgotten, this was an off-track incident, so should have no impact on Formula one at all! Surely the FIA could charge Lux with bringing the sport into disrepute if that did happen?
